The International Union of Electrical Workers, which represents more than 900 salaried workers at GE Drive Systems in Salem, reached a tentative agreement with General Electric on a new three-year contract, the union announced Monday.
The agreement, before becoming effective, will have to be approved by the unions represented by the15-member Coordinated Bargaining Committee of General Electric, Martin Marietta and Westinghouse.
The bargaining committee represented 51,000 General Electric workers worldwide. The contract with GE would have expired Sunday night.
No details of the new agreement were made public.

Hearings slated on phone changes
The Virginia State Corporation Commission has scheduled a series of public hearings to hear comments on proposals by Bell Atlantic-Virginia to extend local calling service in three geographic areas. In all cases, monthly telephone rates would increase if current toll charges were eliminated. The hearings include:
Local calling from the Pulaski exchange to Pearisburg and Radford exchanges and from the Dublin exchange to the Pearisburg exchange. The hearing is scheduled from 3 to 7 p.m. July 26 at the Pulaski County Administration Building.
Local calling from the Blacksburg exchange to the Salem and Shawsville exchanges, 3 to 7 p.m. July 27, Montgomery County Courthouse, Christiansburg.
Local calling from the Pearisburg exchange to the Dublin, Pulaski and Radford exchanges, 3 to 7 p.m. July 28 at the Giles County Circuit Courtroom, Pearisburg.

N&W credit union expands south
N&W Federal Credit Union, a Roanoke-based credit union serving employees and family members of Norfolk Southern Corp., other area businesses and anyone who lives or works in Franklin County, has expanded its operations to Greenville, S.C. The credit union has acquired Greenville SORACO Federal Credit Union, which serves workers of Norfolk Southern's Piedmont Division.
