Olinger, 52, said Tuesday he will seek nomination at the spring 1995 Montgomery Democratic Committee meeting to choose candidates for county constitutional officers.
Olinger becomes the first announced candidate. Sheriff Ken Phipps, a Republican and retired state trooper, has not indicated if he plans to seek a second term. He took office in January 1992 after defeating the 14-year Democratic incumbent, Louis Barber, with 54 percent of the vote. Of the five county constitutional officers, three are Republicans, and two are Democrats.
Olinger said he has been considering making a bid since Christmas and has received permission from Tech to run.
The senior investigator has been with the Tech Police Department for 24 years. He has been captain of the Blacksburg Rescue Squad for 19 years.
Olinger is a Montgomery native and a graduate of Blacksburg High School. He has an associate's degree in police science from New River Community College.
