1,100 AT VA. TECH FFA GATHERING

More than 1,100 members and advisors of the Future Farmers of America arrived at Virginia Tech Monday for the 68th Annual State FFA Convention.

The middle and high school students will participate in state contests ranging from crops judging to farm business management to public speaking to computer applications.

Other students conduct business as convention delegates or serve as members of the Courtesy Corps, which maintains order during the sessions.

Delegates will elect 10 state officers to visit chapters all over the state throughout the 1994-95 school year.

A nominating committee will select Virginia's candidate for national office, who will run in November at the National FFA Convention in Kansas City, Mo.

Marty Coates, a former national FFA vice president, delivered the keynote address at the opening session.

Other convention highlights include a concert featuring Bill Wilkerson Jr. during tonight's session.

State President Chase Lowe of Floyd County will give his farewell address at the final session Thursday morning followed by the incoming state president's address.

FFA is a vocational student organization associated with middle and high school agricultural education programs.
