800 KIDS CAME TO THE TRACK

Track and field was the thing June 18 for more than 800 youngsters, 9-14, from throughout Southwest Virginia.

Athletes representing Pulaski, Christiansburg and 11 other localities converged on Kenneth Dobson Stadium at Pulaski County High School for the Southwestern District Hershey's Youth Track Meet.

Bristol captured the team title with 29 ribbons (first, second and third places), three more than six-time defending champion Pulaski. Pulaski did have a meet-high 12 firsts among its 26 ribbons. Christiansburg finished sixth with 10 ribbons.

"We're very proud of our kids," said EDDIE SUTPHIN, regional director for the Hershey's program. "We had some outstanding performances that should hold up at the state level. Overall, our district has many opportunities to do well at state and hopefully qualify a couple of kids for the national finals."

The top two finishers in each event advance to the state meet July 16 at the University of Virginia in Charlottesville.

Those advancing to Charlottesville from Pulaski include TERRANCE SMITH (boys ages 11-12, won the 100 meters); MIKE DAVIDSON (boys 13-14, won 100, second in 200, won standing long jump); ISRAEL LONG (boys 11-12, won 200); MICHELLE CLARK (girls 13-14, second in 200); MARCUS TRAVIS (boys 9-10, second in 400, won standing long jump); MAURICE CARTER (boys 11-12, second in 400); DANIEL GOFF (boys 11-12, second in 800); CECIL BULLION (boys 13-14, second in 1600); APRIL CHILDRESS (girls 13-14, won 1600); TERRANCE SMITH (boys 11-12, won standing long jump); JOSELYN TRAVIS (girls 11-12, won standing long jump); and three winning 4x100 relay teams - the boys 11-12, the girls 11-12 and the girls 13-14.

Christiansburg's contingent at the state meet will be NATHAN JENNINGS (boys 11-12, second in 100 meters); MATTHEW BOX (boys 9-10, won 400, second in standing long jump) ; MAURICE LEE (boys 11-12, won 400, second in standing long jump); ERIC BEASLEY (boys 13-14, won softball throw); and the boys 11-12 relay team, which finished second.

MORE TRACK AND FIELD: Christiansburg Parks and Recreation and Quantum Leap Fitness Consultants are sponsoring a series of youth track and field clinics at Christiansburg High School.

Discus and hurdles will be taught Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. On July 6 at 6:30 p.m., long jump and triple jump will be taught. On July 7 at 6:30 p.m., shot put and sprint will be taught. And on July 9 at 10 a.m., high jump will be taught.

MIKE SARGENT, assistant track coach at Virginia Tech, will teach discus and shot put. JAY ARTHUR, former men's track coach at Roanoke College, will teach hurdles. BOB SANDY,track coach at Auburn High School, will teach the long jump, triple jump and sprints. And RUSTY KELLEY, track coach at Giles High School, will teach the high jump.

SWIMMING ALONG: The Blacksburg Sunfish swam to victory in their first home meet of the summer swimming league season. They topped Spring Run of Roanoke and Radford 913-750-691.

The Sunfish set five team records. In girls ages 9-10, EUNICE KIM captured the 50-meter breaststroke in 43.84 seconds and the 100 freestyle in 1 minute, 14.99 seconds. In boys 15-16, WHIT HUGHSTON won the 100 freestyle in 58.69 and the 50 breaststroke in 34.59. And in women 19-24, JEN GRIZZARD won the 50 breaststroke in 36.74.

Double winners for the Sunfish in the Gold Division (highest) included Kim, Hughston, Grizzard (100 freestyle), STEVE LANK (boys 13-14, 100 freestyle and 50 breaststroke) and JAMES WOLFE (men 25-39, 100 freestyle and 50 breaststroke). In the Silver Division, ALAN DAVIS won twice (men 19-24, 100 freestyle and 50 breaststroke). And in the Bronze Division, JULIA KAUFMAN captured two events among girls 13-14: the 100 freestyle and 50 breaststroke.

The Southwest Aquatic Team finished third in the recent Holston Valley Hospital-Sullivan Center Invitational.

Only the Bristol Area Swim Association (2886.5 points) and the Kingsport Swim Association (2716.5) finished ahead of SWAT (2327).

Top point-getters for SWAT were GRAHAM GRAVLEY with 234 points in boys 13-14, BRIAN MANNING with 193 points in senior men, and Hughston with 165 points in senior men.

BALLS AND BATS:The Braves, Astros and Giants won their respective divisions, not in the National League, but in Dixie Youth Baseball in Pulaski.

The Braves (9-1) captured the Dixie Majors (ages 11-12). The pitching of ADAM DALTON (7-0 with 59 strikeouts and 10 hits allowed in 26 innings) and the hitting of ADAM WOLFORD (.733) helped the Braves recover from a season-opening loss to reel off nine straight victories.

The Astros (9-1) won the Dixie Minors (ages 9-10). They did it with offense, outscoring the opposition 48-17 in their last three games, including an 18-0 win over the As as CHANCE RATCLIFF pitched his second no-hitter of the season and ELIZABETH HAGER had five RBI.

The Giants (8-1) took the Dixie Boys (ages 13-14) championship behind a pair of strong pitching performances from BRAD ANDERSON in the 8-2 victory over the second-place Cardinals and the 7-3 pennant-clincher against the Braves.

TENNIS TALES:The Aces won a pair of matches in the New River Valley Men's 4.5 Tennis League. They beat Snack Attack 5-0 and Top Gun 3-1. DAVID SCHULTZ won at singles in each match. In other league action, Snack Attack topped Top Gun 4-1.

GOLF GAMES: The foursome of CURTIS WOOD, SCOTT BURTON, CHUCK KISER and DOUG CHILDRESS won the morning event in the Laurel Meadows Home Golf Tournament at Olde Mill Golf Resort in Patrick County.

LARRY GOAD and FRANK HAYES finished 1-2 in the afternoon Callaway format event that had to be shortened because of thunderstorms.

CAMPS UPDATE: Concord College in Athens, W.Va., is holding football, boys' basketball and girls' basketball camps.
