EX-BEDFORD DEPUTY FOUND GUILTY OF DUI

A former Bedford County sheriff's deputy was found guilty Wednesday of driving under the influence.

Calvin Douglas Ellis of Moneta had his driver's license suspended for 12 months by the Bedford County General District Court. He also was fined $350, which was suspended, and was ordered to attend classes with the Virginia Alcohol Safety Action Program. He was issued a restricted operator's license that allows him to drive to work and to VASAP classes.

Ellis resigned from the Sheriff's Office in March after he drove a county-owned vehicle off an embankment on Virginia 375. The deputy was off duty at the time of the accident. Damage to the vehicle was estimated at $10,000.

Last year, three Bedford County deputies were suspended for 60 days and demoted after they were found to be drinking on duty.
