LOTTERY PROFITS GROW MORE SLOWLY

Virginia Lottery ticket sales increased for a fifth consecutive year, although at a slower pace than in previous years.

The State Lottery Department will transfer $302 million to the general fund today, the last day of the fiscal year, spokeswoman Paula Otto said Wednesday. That is $4.9 million more than in fiscal 1993.

Ticket sales the previous two years increased by $6.3 million and $8.8 million. Since the lottery began in 1989, it has contributed nearly $1.5 billion to the general fund.
