IN SCHOOL

YEN THUY LIEU and MATTHEW SCOTT CARTY have each been awarded $1,000 scholarships by the Junior League of Roanoke Valley, Virginia Inc. Two Mary Terry Goodwin Kuyk scholarships are awarded each year, one to a male and one to a female high school student in recognition of outstanding volunteer service.

Lieu, a Patrick Henry High School senior who arrived in the United States four years ago, works as a volunteer with Roanoke's Refugee Resettlement Program. She will attend Hollins College in the fall and major in accounting and international relations.

Carty serves as a volunteer with several groups, including his church, Roanoke Area Ministries, the Salvation Army and Festival in the Park. The Northside High senior will major in architecture in the fall at the University of Virginia.

\ HIDDEN VALLEY JUNIOR HIGH SCHOOL has announced the names of its students who received honors in the 1994 Nationwide Latin Examination.

Sally Hanson and Matt Schroeder won summa cum laude gold medals for their high scores. Silver medals, or maxima cum laude, went to Missy Lauer and Elizabeth Nelson.

Certificates of merit, magna cum laude, went to Kim Amos, Josh Casker, Helen Colosimo, Scott Keilman, Alexa Thacker and Dana Woods-Allen. Cum laude certificates of merit went to Scott Greenway, Lori Hartman, Colin Sigmon, Stephen Squires and Toby Townsend.

\ KATHERINE DENISE MOORE of Vinton recently received a bachelor of arts degree in music from Berea College in Berea, Ky.

\ DAVIDSON COLLEGE, in Davidson, N.C., recently announced the names of its Roanoke-area graduates.

They are: Richard Kevin Garbee, son of Richard and Linda Garbee of Salem, political science major and a 1990 graduate of North Cross School; Sara Kathryn Ayers, daughter of Ronald and Jodi Ayers of Roanoke, psychology major and 1990 graduate of Patrick Henry High School; Matthew Maxwell Laughon, son of Kenneth C. and Sally Laughon of Roanoke, biology major, magna cum laude, and a 1990 graduate of North Cross School; and Del Arden Turner, son of Betty Shepherd of Roanoke, economics major and a 1990 graduate of Patrick Henry High School.

\ AMANDA GAIL FRAZIER, daughter of Dr. and Mrs. Edwin R. Frazier of Roanoke, has been named to the dean's list at Mars Hill College in Mars Hill, N.C.

\ HAMPDEN-SYDNEY COLLEGE has named three Roanoke students to its dean's list.

They are W. Scott Thomasson, son of Mrs. Judy N. Ross; Ian McDade, son of Mr. and Mrs. Neil McDade; and Jeffrey M. Shepard, son of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph J. Shepard.

\ RANDOLPH-MACON COLLEGE has announced the names of its Roanoke-area graduates. Receiving bachelor of arts degrees are John Edward Morgan, Rodney Allen Jefferson, Brian Luke Fannin and Eric Benjamin Tull, all of Roanoke.

Barbara Ann Robertson of Salem received a bachelor of science degree.

\ WASHINGTON AND LEE UNIVERSITY has announced the names of its Roanoke graduates.

They are Amy E. Brown, daughter of Daniel and Suzanne Brown, major in religion; and Anne W. Matthews, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. J.A.Matthews Jr., major in biology.

\ EMORY & HENRY COLLEGE has named several Roanoke students to its dean's list.

They are Heather Ammermann, daughter of Eleanor and Gifford Ammermann; Brian Leland, son of Nilah and Harry Leland; Tim Ward, son of Sandra Connolly and Roger Ward; and Robyn Mundy, daughter of Sue and Jack Mundy.

\ FERRUM COLLEGE has named eight Roanoke students to the dean's list for the spring semester.

They are Jason L. Beheler, Amy E. Colgrove, William G. Henderson, Myra A. Johnson, Bryan E. Martin, Robert L. Richards, Elisabeth G. Schuermann and Tyneka L. Simmons.

\ BRIDGEWATER COLLEGE has named seven Roanoke Valley students to the dean's list for the spring term.

From Roanoke - Michelle Rena Brown, a freshman and daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Garland Brown; Elizabeth Kirk Claybrook, a senior art major and daughter of David and Patricia Kirk; Jennifer Adele Lowe, a senior sociology major and daughter of Mr. and Mrs. George Lowe; David Lynn Pugh, a senior physics major and son of the Rev. and Mrs. William Pugh.

From Salem - David Preston Cox, a freshman English major and son of Kenney and Patty Cox.

From Blue Ridge - Jeffrey C. Mills, a senior art major and son of Mr. and Mrs. Harold Mills.

From Daleville - Christie Leigh Osborne, a junior art major and daughter of Gary and Carol Osborne.

\ WILLIAM R. SMITH, son of William R. and Gwendolyn B. Smith of Roanoke, has been accepted for enrollment in the 1994 summer session at the North Carolina School of the Arts. He will study in the School of Dance program. Smith is a student at William Ruffner Middle School.

\ HOLLINS COLLEGE has announced the names of Roanoke Valley residents who received degrees during the 1994 commencement.

Those earning a master of arts in liberal studies were:

For humanities - Barbara Jane Henry Bowen, Janice Rosenthal Holbrook, Margaretha Cook Martin, Joan Buchanan Ramsey, Ann Sims Rutherford and Kimberly Dawn Shisler, all of Roanoke; Cythia Jean Munley of Salem; Barbara Norman Lashley of Vinton.

For social science - Joy Suzanne Davis and Gayle Colleen Stoner of Roanoke and Donna Bernettie Gnegy of Salem.

In general - Carla Richardson Barrell of Hardy, Mercedes Bruce James of Roanoke, and Rosemary Ann Saul of Salem.

Those receiving bachelor of arts degrees were Kimberly Hope Mitchell, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Edward A. Mitchell Sr. of Roanoke; Sandy J. Cape, daughter of Rudy and Lucy Cape of Roanoke; Sherry Zimmerman Dyer, daughter of Sherman C. Zimmerman of Fincastle and Linda Medley of Lenox, Miss.; Jeni Michelle Almond, daughter of Kenneth and Regina Almond of Vinton.

Those receiving master of arts degrees in psychology were Elizabeth Ann Cook, Robert Dean Rhodes and Robert Kendall Vipperman, all of Roanoke.

Michael Louis Allen of Roanoke received a master of arts degree in English on May 15.
