IN SCHOOL

ASHLEY BLAKE MATTHEWS and SARAH ENGLISH TUNE were named to the honor roll for the winter term at Washington and Lee University.

Matthews, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. J.A. Matthews Jr. of Roanoke, was a sophomore; Tune, daughter of Nancy C. Tune of Roanoke, was a junior.

\ HUNTER FRANKLIN ARMSTRONG and ERIC ROBERT MINTZ have made the dean's list for the winter term at Washington and Lee University.

Armstrong, son of Dr. and Mrs. David L. Armstrong of Roanoke, was a freshman at the school and Mintz, son of Mr. and Mrs. Alan R. Mintz of Roanoke, was a junior.

\ THE VIRGINIA BAR ASSOCIATION has recognized several students who wrote essays on the judicial system during the association's Community Law Week. The students are: Katrina Snyder, Bobbi McKinney, Laura Welch, and Paul Wheeling, all from Stonewall Jackson Middle School; Abby Fifer, Sarah Whitman and Virginia L. Green, from James Madison Middle School; Buck Noell, Evan Nitchman, Joseph Hammerstrom, and Abbie Ferrance, from Woodrow Wilson Middle School; Eric Orange and Angela Hain, from Lucy Addison Middle School.

\ CINDY CREWS has been chosen as a Quest '94 assistant at Radford University.

Crews, a graduate student and daughter of Robert E. Crews of 5244 Setter Drive, is majoring in elementary education, with an emphasis on learning disabilities.

\ THE WOODMEN OF THE WORLD LIFE INSURANCE SOCIETY LODGES 362 and 66 recently recognized several Roanoke Valley students who participated in the lodges' American History program.

Horace B. Thomas Jr. of Patrick Henry High School won the outstanding award. Other students receiving awards were: Mac Craft, Craig County High School; Elaine Ranguillo, Roanoke Catholic High School; Alice Arnold, William Fleming High School; Jasmine Jilla, Northside High School; Ernest V. Clark III, Roanoke Valley Christian School; and Gena Nasca, Cave Spring High School.

\ DENISE DAUM, a medical student at the Medical College of Virginia, has received a Summer Student Fellowship for 1994 from the MCV/VCU Cancer Education Council.

Daum, daughter of Conrad and Beverly Daum of Roanoke, will assist in a program of breast cancer screening and detection involving underserved populations. The project is sponsored by the National Cancer Institute.

She is a 1988 graduate of North Cross School.

\ JENNIFER DAUM, a student at James Madison University, will be a radio show host at station WXJM, the college's radio station in Harrisonburg. Her show will feature classic rock. This honor is presented to students by the station manager for their extensive work, merit and dedication. Daum, daughter of Conrad and Beverly Daum, was an assistant director of underwriting and assisted with promotions. She is also a 1993 Patrick Henry High School graduate.

\ DANIEL DAUM, a student at Patrick Henry High School, received the Best Speaker ribbon for the school's Toastmasters Club seminars. He organized the seminars, working with the Roanoke Valley Toastmasters Club, as a project for his business class.

He is the son of Conrad and Beverly Daum of Roanoke.

\ W.E. JOHNSON JR. of Roanoke received the 1994 Outstanding Alumnus Award from the Hargrave Alumni Association. Johnson, who was chairman of the board and board member since 1984, is president of Johnson Investments in Roanoke. He also spearheaded a drive for funding a $2 million pool facility for the school.

\ RODNEY DAVID MALOUF, son of Rafie and Lenore Malouf of Roanoke, received his juris doctor degree from Regent University. He is a graduate of Roanoke Valley Christian and the College of William and Mary.

\ TRACEY WILSON AND ANGELA TOLLEY, students at William Byrd High School, participated in the State VICA competition in Richmond. Wilson placed first in principles of technology and will compete in the National VICA competition in Kansas City, Mo.

Tolley placed second in occupational display for cosmetology.

\ PAMELA PAYNTER, special education teacher at William Byrd High School, has been selected to serve as a supervising teacher for a graduate practicum from Radford University.

\ JoELLEN GORDON, daughter of Cliff and Charlene Gordon, has been named a Collegiate Scholastic All-American by the United States Achievement Academy. The scholars must earn a 3.30 or better grade point average.

\ BENT MOUNTAIN ELEMENTARY SCHOOL is the winner of the poster contest sponsored by the Virginia Women Attorneys Association and the Community Law Week Committee of the Virginia State Bar Young Lawyers Section. Elementary school students from Roanoke, Roanoke County and Salem participated, and created posters using words and drawing to present their solutions to communitywide problems.

\ EAST CAROLINA UNIVERSITY in Greenville, N.C., has awarded degrees to the following Roanoke residents: Michelle Ann Barbery, bachelor of science degree in elementary education; Wallace H. Lynn III, bachelor science degree in leisure system studies; Abigail Leigh Pack, bachelor of music in music education; Joel Scott Svec, bachelor of science in geology; and Jonathan Baldwin Willett, bachelor of science in computer science.
