IN SCHOOL

BEN F. WADE, formerly of Roanoke, has been named the 1994 Distinguished Alumnus of Bridgewater College. He is vice president and dean of the College at Florida Southern College. Wade has three master's degrees and a doctorate and was Bridgewater's first provost. He is son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Frank H. Wade of Roanoke.

\ TIMOTHY BENDEL and LANA NASSIF, both of Roanoke, were inducted into the Mu Chapter of Phi Beta Kappa at Virginia Tech. Bendel is a computer science major and Nassif is a biology major.

\ THE AMERICAN ASSOCIATION OF TEACHERS OF FRENCH recently named several Roanoke Valley students who competed and placed in the The National French Contest.

The Roanoke area winners in Level 1 were: Shari Perkins of North Cross, first place; Tracy Reed and Marie Keith, both of Lord Botetourt, second place tie; Lindsey Hoagland of North Cross, third place; Amanda Jones, Meagan Crowder, and Justin Hurst, all of Lord Botetourt, received fourth, fifth and sixth place, respectively.

Level 2 winners were: Sylvana Sinha of North Cross, first place; Andrea Henderson of Lord Botetourt, second place; Karen Jargowsky and Sara Dudley, both of Lord Botetourt, third place tie; Mary Beth Ladenheim of Lord Botetourt, fourth place; Stephanie Yost and Kari McGlamary, both of Lord Botetourt, fifth place tie; and Leigh Ann Jones of William Fleming, sixth place.

Level 3 winners were: Jason Munley of Salem High School, first place; Evan Richardson of Lord Botetourt, second place; Claire Brewer of Fleming and Alyson Montgomery of Lord Botetourt, third place tie; Emily Morrison and Cindy Harris, both of Lord Botetourt, fourth place tie; Christy Fons and April Mattox, both of Lord Botetourt, placed fifth and sixth, respectively.

Kristina Patterson of Lord Botetourt placed first in the Roanoke area and third in the state on Level 4.

On Level 5, Sandra Williams of Cave Spring was first in the area, state and region; and Khaled Alami of Cave Spring was second in the area, state and region and fifth in the nation.

\ THE COLLEGE OF HEALTH SCIENCES recently announced their spring semester president's and dean's list students. The president's list requires a 3.5 or above grade point average, and the dean's list requires a 3.0 to 3.49 grade point average.

\ CELESTE T. DEREY, daughter of Clifford and Jessie Derey of Roanoke, recently graduated from Meredith College in Raleigh, N.C.

Derey, graduated in December with a bachelor of arts degree in English.

\ MELISSA D. PAXTON of Roanoke recently graduated from Milligan College in Tennessee.

Paxton, daughter of Henry and Helen Paxton, received a bachelor of science degree in business and psychology. A 1990 graduate of Cave Spring High School, Paxton was named to dean's list and also served as a representative and treasurer for the dorm council.

\ YVONNE M. BELANGER, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Belanger of Roanoke, recently received a bachelor of arts degree from St. John's College in Annapolis, Md.

\ SARAH LOVELACE DILLON of Roanoke recently graduated magna cum laude in education for the deaf and hard of hearing from Barton College in Wilson, N.C.

She also was on the dean's list.

\ MATTHEW M. LAUGHON, son of Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth C. Laughon of Roanoke, graduated magna cum laude from Davidson College in North Carolina, with a bachelor of science degree in biology.

Laughon also was awarded the distinction of Phi Beta Kappa, and will attend the University of Virginia's Medical School in the fall.

\ KIMBERLEY SUE ROBERTS and LINDSEY CAROL TEAR graduated from Carson-Newman College in Jefferson City, Tenn.

Roberts, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Alwin R. Roberts of Roanoke, received a bachelor of science degree in consumer services.

Tear, daughter of Carol K. Tear of Roanoke, was awarded a bachelor of arts degree in French. She graduated magna cum laude.

\ DAVID PUGH, son of the Rev. and Mrs. William Pugh of Roanoke, graduated with honors from Bridgewater College.

The 1990 graduate of Cave Spring High School will study nuclear engineering at the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

\ CHARLES WILLIAM SULT, son of Charles and Elizabeth Sult of Roanoke, recently graduated summa cum laude from Trenton (N.J.) State College.

The Patrick Henry High School graduate has received a three-year scholarship for graduate studies and a teaching assistant position at Rutgers University, New Brunswick, N.J.

\ CONSTANCE IRENE MECK and MATTHEW ROGER FOUTZ, both of Roanoke, recently graduated from the University of South Carolina, Columbia.

Meck received a master of education in adult and continuing education, and Foutz received a master of arts in conservation-archeology.

\ NEW RIVER COMMUNITY COLLEGE, in Dublin has announced the names of its spring graduates from the Roanoke area. They are: Nora Nunnery Smith of Salem; and Carl D. Cress III, Michael W. Davis and Frank J. Wolfe Jr., all of Roanoke.

\ ROBERT JENKINS, professor of biology at Roanoke College, has received a $5,553 grant from the Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries to fund a population-status survey of the candy darter, a fish that is endemic to the New River drainage.

Because populations of this fish have been declining recently, a survey will help determine whether the candy darter should be placed on state and federal lists of endangered species.

Also, the Mednick Fellowships Committee of the Virginia Foundation for Independent Colleges has awarded Jenkins a $550 grant for travel expenses to the Clinch River in Southwest Virginia for research on spawning behavior of the river redhorse, a freshwater fish.

\ THE E. PRICE RIPLEY MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP was recently awarded to three Roanoke Valley high school seniors.

Kristy F. Ratcliffe, daughter of Philip and Carol Carp; and Jonathan W. Hunley, son of Douglas and Martha Hunley, will both graduate from Patrick Henry High School.

Jeremy J. Spillen, son of Margaret A. Spillen, will graduate from Salem High School.

The scholarships are based on academic achievement, extra-curricular activities and financial need.

\ SARAH WRAY of Roanoke was the Wray winner of the DAR essay contest at James Madison Middle School. The essay topic this year was "Coming to America In Colonial Days." This contest was sponsored by the Margaret Lynn Lewis Chapter of DAR.

\ DOMINION BUSINESS SCHOOL has announced its director's, dean's and perfect attendance lists for the 1994 winter quarter.
