SUSAN R. BOOTHE, daughter of Nancy Speedy of Roanoke, has been named administrator of indirect distribution for GTE Mobilnet. The company operates as Cellular One in 12 markets in the Carolinas, Georgia and Virginia. Boothe, formerly of Roanoke, joined Contel Cellular in 1988 and received Employee Quality Awards in 1992 and 1993.

\ C.C. FU of Roanoke has received Ingersoll-Rand Company's 1993 Patent Excellence Award for his invention of a new pneumatic-percussion rock drill. Fu, a senior engineering consultant for the company's rock drill division, is based at its Roanoke plant. The new product, Ingersoll-Rand's Quantum Leap series of down hole drills, was introduced in 1992.

Fu holds master of science and doctoral degrees from the University of Minnesota. He joined Ingersoll-Rand in 1963 and was a senior development engineer from 1986 to 1994.

Fu is one of the first inductees into the company's Technical Career Ladder, a program that allows engineers to gain professional advancement in technical fields as a counterpart to managerial advancement.

\ DEBORAH DUMMITT, formerly of Roanoke, has been promoted to branch officer for Commerce Bank in Newport News. Dummitt, a graduate of Northside High School and Radford University, joined the bank in 1988.

\ DR. CHARLES D. GILLILAND of Roanoke recently was elected to fellowship in the American College of Physicians, a professional organization of internists, and to the board of trustees for the Virginia Society of Internal Medicine.

Fellowship in the American College of Physicians is the result of peer nomination and a recognition of scholarly and professional achievements.

Gilliland, who practices at Lewis-Gale Clinic, is a clinical associate professor of internal medicine at the University of Virginia and a member of the Roanoke Academy of Medicine, the Medical Society of Virginia, the American Society of internal Medicine and the American Medical Association.

\ LAURIE E. GIBBONS has been named a Certified Fund Raising Executive by the National Society of Fund Raising Executives.

The status indicates a high standard of tenure, performance, education, knowledge and service in a not-for-profit organization. Gibbons is president of Junior Achievement of Southwest Virginia.

\ GWYN & HARMON, REALTORS, BETTER HOMES AND GARDENS was recognized as the first place Better Homes and Gardens office in Division Six for Residential Volume Real Estate Sales for 1993 and second for number of units sold.

\ THE ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH DIVISION of Roanoke City Health Department recognized 1993 winners of the Silver Spoon Award for excellence in commitment and dedication to sanitation and safe food handling practices for the dining public. This year's winners were: D.J. Brasserie, full-service restaurant; Orange Dog Snack Bar at Towers; and Burger King on Orange Ave. Certificates of recognition were given to other nominees, including: Lowell's Restaurant and Supper Club, New Yorker Deli, and Burger King at Valley View Mall.

\ AIA BLUE RIDGE, a chapter of the American Institute of Architects, recently announced 1994 chapter honors, recognizing members and nonmembers for their significant contributions to the profession of architecture and the built environment. Winners from the Roanoke Valley are: allied artist, Eric E. Fitzpatrick, artist/painter; craftsmanship, Bruce Cody, Architectural Wood Inc.; and distinguished service to the profession, Oliver J. Stein, AIA emeritus.

Richard S. Kazabee and Erica Frances Sunshine, both of Roanoke were the professional winners for the 1994 Student/Associate/Young Architect Award.

\ HOUSECALL HEALTHCARE recently raised $250 for its Indigent Fund by dunking co-workers for $1. The fund is used to purchase necessities such as medications and medical equipment for citizens who cannot afford them. HOUSECALL Healthcare, a home health company, offers nursing or therapeutic service that can be rendered in the home.

\ EDWARD A. WORKMAN, a neuropsychiatrist and pain medicine specialist in Roanoke, has been named to the editorial board of Pain Digest, an international medical journal.

Workman is in private practice, as well as co-director of psychiatric research at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Salem.

\ CECELIA GALMISH and MILDY TILLER, both of Roanoke, recently received the Certified Professional Service Representative designation from the Professional Insurance Agents Association of Virginia and the District of Columbia.

Galmish is an employee of Richardson, Johnston & Wynn; and Tiller is an employee of Erie Insurance Group.

\ DAPHNEY GROGAN AND JOHN EAKIN, both of Roanoke, won a $1,000 shopping spree during the recent three-day grand opening celebration at the newly remodeled Hills Department Store in the Hills Plaza. Ten other residents were each awarded a $50 Hills gift certificate, and seven youngsters also won prizes.

\ CHRISTLE N. MORRIS of Roanoke was recently promoted to consumer credit officer at the First Union Roanoke Operations Center. She first joined Dominion Bank in 1984 which later merged with First Union.

\ WANDA P. SEARS, a personal financial planner with IDS Financial Services Inc., has been named as IDS Master Planner.

\ JON M. DABAREINER, a personal financial planner with the local office of IDS Financial Services, Inc., was recently appointed to IDS' President's Advisory Council and will attend the annual conference in Athens, Greece, in September. He qualified to join the council based on superior performance and client service.

\ E.L. DERRING, president of PWH Corporation in Manassas and native Roanoker, is retiring. Previously he was an assistant administrator and then administrator at Roanoke Memorial Rehabilitation Center. He also was associate director at Roanoke Memorial Hospital.

\ ROGER WEDDLE, son of Gladys Weddle of Roanoke, recently received the Nalley-Graves Award for placing first in the staff essay event at the Virginia Society of Radiologic Technologists annual meeting in Richmond. He is a staff technologist and assistant clinical instructor in the radiologic technology school at Mary Washington Hospital in Fredricksburg.

\ JULIA ALLEN, daughter of Wade H. and Alice H. Horton of Catawba, is the 1994 recipient of the Brown, Edwards & Company Accounting Achievement Award.

\ FRED BURTNER, owner and operator of the Rent-A-Wreck franchise in Roanoke, has been named to the company's new advisory council.

The council represents more than 400 Rent-A-Wreck franchise owners in the United States, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Australia and the United Arab Emirates.

The Roanoke location recently moved to 2006 Peters Creek Road N.W.

Ex-officios representing Roanoke are Elizabeth Bowles of Roanoke City Council and E. Douglas Chittum, economic development specialist. Roger D. Dalton, executive director of the association, will represent the association.

\ AMERICAN BIOSYSTEMS INC. in Roanoke recently received a Governor's Award for Excellence for its participation in and sponsorship of the Virginia Department of Economic Development's International Market Planning program.

In the program, teams of graduate business students at Virginia colleges and universities are paired with Virginia companies interested in expanding their exports.

\ HILLS DEPARTMENT STORES in Roanoke recently gave pins, representing years of service to several employees.

\ GENE McGUIRE, vice president for finance of the Bergland Group, was recently elected president of the Williamson Road Area Business Association Inc. for 1994-95.

\ LIN CHAFF PUBLIC RELATIONS & ADVERTISING recently received a Medallion Award at the 47th annual Virginia Public Relations Awards.

The award, in the Special Projects, Business/Industry or Government, Low Budget category, was for the firm's managing of publicity surrounding the sale of Tanglewood Mall.

\ JUNE HODGE of Roanoke has been nominated for a national Reminisce Club award for provided outstanding service to senior citizens.

Winners of the award receive a free trip to Hawaii.

Hodge, who was nominated by Harold Gibson fo Roanoke, is an employee of First Union National Bank of Virginia.

\ WILLIS "BUCK" BUCHANAN of the Roanoke County Volunteer Fire Department and Rescue Squad No. 5, Hollins, was inducted into the Virginia Life Saving and Rescue Hall of Fame. In 1967, he served as president, vice president, chaplain and first lieutenant of the squad. He has also served as president of the Roanoke Valley Association of Rescue Squads, and on the Board of Governors of the Virginia Association of Volunteer Rescue Squads. He currently serves as administrator of the Critical Incident Stress Debriefing Team of the Western Virginia Council and is a member of the State CISD Committee.

\ PITZER TRANSFER AND STORAGE CORP. has announced that six of its commercial drivers from the Roanoke area have received safe driver awards for a one-year qualifying period. Those drivers are, Elliot Finney, Houston Goad, Daniel Jenkins, and Fred McCoy, all of Roanoke; and Douglas Flowers and Teddy Sloan, both from Vinton.

\ DR. KEITH C. EDMUNDS of Roanoke has completed continuing medical education requirements to retain active membership in the American Academy of Family Physicians, the national association of family doctors.

\ MICHAEL W. KURTZ of Roanoke has received Liberty Mutual Insurance Company's Auto Plus award for 1993 in recognition of his outstanding achievement in sales of auto policies.

\ CLIFFORD A. WRIGHT of Roanoke recently retired after 25 years with the Department of Transportation service. Wright jointed VDOT in 1968, and at his retirement was a senior materials technician.

\ JAMES N. HINSON JR., president and chief executive officer of First Virginia Bank-Southwest, recently presented $1,200 to the Roanoke Chapter of the Easter Seal Society. The contribution was made on behalf of the children who participated in the eight, valleywide Easter egg hunts held on March 19.

\ ANDREA G. MULLINS of the Southwest Virginia Agency of the Principal Financial Group, has qualified for the company's Premier Club. Premier Club honors those agents who are leaders in providing life and health insurance, financial need analysis, pension and profit sharing services and other financial services.

\ LLOYD CHRISTIAN has been named North American Van Lines Relocations Services Division Vanguard Trip winner. He also was named to the Royalguard Program, a group of van operators who have been in service with North American Van Lines for a minimum of 10 years and participated in the Vanguard Program for that length of time.

\ LEE F. BROOKS, a personal financial planner with IDS Financial Services, Inc., has achieved the professional designation Certified Financial Planner.

\ MARY B. BLANTON has been promoted to cash management sales officer for First Union National Bank of Virginia. She joined Dominion Bank in 1990; the bank merged with First Union in 1993.

\ DR. J. JOE YAZEL, of Roanoke, has been elected a fellow in the American Psychiatric Association. Yazel joined the staff at the Salem Veteran Affairs Medical Center in 1992 to develop and direct the University of Virginia Roanoke-Salem Psychiatric Medicine Residency Program.

\ ZELDA CARROLL and MIKE PUGH have been named winners of the 1994 David C. Williamson Jr. Award of Excellence by Lewis-Gale Hospital.

Two winners - one from direct patient care and one from indirect care - are selected annually in recognition for their service, commitment and provision of excellence in patient care.

Carroll, direct patient care winner, is the night charge nurse in the hospital's intensive care department.

Pugh, indirect care winner, is a purchasing specialist for surgical services in the hospital.

\ JEFFREY D. WILSON of Equitable Life Insurance Company in Roanoke was recently honored for his excellent customer service and outstanding sales production.

\ H. WATTS STEGER III, president of the Bank of Buchanan, has been elected first vice president of the Virginia Association of Community Banks.

Steger joined the Bank of Buchanan in 1971. He is past chairman of the board of the Virginia Bankers' Bank, president of the Buchanan Rotary Club and a member of Botetourt County Social Services Board.

\ ROSS MARTIN, a laboratory technician at Sybron Chemicals Inc., has been promoted to second shift lab supervisor for the production laboratory.

\ J.C. TAYLOR a sales associate with Century 21 Young Realty Co., recently received the Sales Achievement Gold Award for first quarter sales excellence by the company's Mid-Atlantic States Blue Ridge District.

This is the highest quarterly award in the district and represents only the top 2 percent of sales associates in the district and top 1 percent in the Greater Virginia Region.

\ ROBERT A. FULGARO, district manager in Roanoke for The Franklin Life Insurance Co., has qualified for the company's Circle of Champions Club.
