MAXWELL TO SPEAK

Former major-league star Charlie Maxwell will be the special guest July 7 at Municipal Field for the Roanoke-Salem Baseball Hall of Fame's annual night. The Buccaneers and Lynchburg Red Sox meet at 7 p.m. in a Carolina League game.

Maxwell, inducted in February, won the Class B Piedmont League's Triple Crown in 1949 with the Roanoke Red Sox, then played 14 major-league seasons.

The Roanoke-Salem Hall also will announce the winner of the annual Ray Bellamy Memorial Award, presented to the high school player of the year from the Hall's seven-county region.

In other sports in the region:

Former Virginia free safety Keith Lyle signed a one-year contract with the NFL's Los Angeles Rams. Lyle, a third-round draft pick whose father played for the Chicago Bears, was the defensive MVP in the East-West Shrine game and a first-team All-ACC selection.

A mixed-doubles tennis team from Roanoke finished third Sunday in the four-team North Atlantic Mixed Doubles Championships in New Haven, Conn. Winning teams were Butch Church and Carol Fitch (twice) and Wallace Allen and Libba Lemon as Roanoke compiled a 3-4 record.
