GE contract features pay increases

A new three-year contract between GE and members of the International Union of Electrical Workers provides for wage increases totaling 8.5 percent, six additional cost-of-living increases and a special trades increase, the union reported Wednesday.

The contract was negotiated by a Coordinated Bargaining Committee, which consists of 15 unions representing workers at GE, Martin Marietta and Westinghouse. The IUE, the largest of the unions in the CBC, was the lead negotiating union and represents 900 non-salaried workers at GE Drive Systems in Salem.

Following unanimous recommendation by the 15 CBC unions to approve the contract, IUE members must ratify the agreement. Voting will take place by July 6.

Another feature of the new contract is an early retirement option that allows workers aged 55 with 25 years of service to retire in November with full pensions.

The CBC and Martin Marietta and Westinghouse will negotiate separate contracts later this summer.

Paperworkers union approves contract

Local 884 of the United Paperworkers International Union has approved a new two-year contract with AET Packaging Films in Covington, the company announced Wednesday.

The plant is a division of Applied Extrusion Technologies Inc. of Salem, Mass., which bought it as part of the packaging films group of Hercules Inc. on April 7.

A spokesman for the firm's management said he was pleased that the labor-contract portion of the acquisition is complete and is looking forward to strengthening the company's competitive position. The contract was approved by the union's members late Tuesday.

The new labor agreement provides for 3 percent wage increases in each of the two years, improves differential pay between shifts by 5 cents in the first year, and provides for a long-term disability and dental plans, which become effective in the contract's first year.

The company increased the match for the 401(k) savings and investment plan for employees above what was previously offered by Hercules and added a profit-sharing plan to the 401(k) plan. A one-time $400 ratification bonus was also provided as an incentive for employees to approve the contract.

The Covington plant makes polypropylene film used mainly in the packaging of snack foods and tobacco products. It has about 350 workers.
