Sorority is recognized at state convention

The Delta Kappa Chapter of Epsilon Sigma Alpha Sorority was recently named Most Outstanding Chapter in Virginia.

The chapter also won the second place Shelby Hodges First Pearl Trophy for increased membership.

Other awards were earned by: Juanita B. Leasure, second place Philanthropic Community Service Hours Award and second place Dot Harcus State Project-Camp Fantastic Award; Carolyn Harrison Zimmerman and the chapter, Gold Link Award for excellence in education; Elaine Prillaman and Kathy Wilson, Division I second place for the group's scrapbook; Carol Campbell, second place Sandy Reedy Publicity Award; Barbara Thomas, St. Jude Distinguished Service Honorarium for outstanding support of St. Jude's Children's Hospital.

Campbell was also voted Woman of the Year by her chapter.

\ Youth winners named in symphony competition

Whitney Hanes, flutist and student at Cave Spring High School, was the first-place winner in the Roanoke Symphony Volunteer Association's Young Artist Awards competition.

Eleven musicians, all members of the Roanoke Youth Symphony, participated in the competition.

Hanes received a $200 prize and an opportunity to perform as a soloist with the Roanoke Youth Symphony. She has won state and regional woodwind competition and is a member of the National High School Flute Choir of the National Flute Association. She is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. L. Thompson Hanes, and a student of Shari Barbour.

Jeremiah T. Shaw, son of Teresa G. and Clyde T. Shaw of Blacksburg, came in second for the second consecutive year.

Kate Nettles, oboist and student at Cave Spring High, received the third place prize of $50 for her performance. She is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Nettles. She studies oboe with Margo Easter and piano with Carolyn Victorine.

Steven Hess, son of Mr. and Mrs. John Hess of Christiansburg received honorable mention.
