3 children, man drown in Fauquier

MARSHALL - A man and three children drowned Thursday in a Fauquier County pond when they became stuck on its muddy bottom, authorities said.

Sheriff Joe Higgs identified the dead man as Zavis Hill, 27, of Marshall. The children were identified as April Williams, 13; her brother George Hamm, 8; and their cousin Tina Hamm, 7.

County Emergency Services Coordinator Chuck Thompson said the victims were swimming in a farm pond in about 7 feet of water. Higgs said the pond, off Virginia 710 and 644 near Marshall, has about a foot of silt at the bottom that apparently had a ``quicksand'' effect.

Bear takes tour of Charlottesville

CHARLOTTESVILLE - A wayward black bear caused a commotion on the city's downtown mall.

The bear, estimated to weigh 200 pounds, was spotted about 9 a.m. Wednesday and last was seen around noon headed north into Albemarle County.

Police earnestly chased the bear, but to no avail. They also spent a considerable amount of time warning people that the bear was headed their way, but then people lined up for a better look, Charlottesville police Sgt. Dave Pleasants said.
