W&L GRADUATE GETS NCAA SCHOLARSHIP

Angie Carrington, a recent graduate of Washington and Lee, has been awarded an NCAA postgraduate scholarship.

Carrington, the 16th W&L recipient of the scholarship and first woman, was a first-team All-American in lacrosse for the Generals last season and a standout soccer player.

The Charlottesville native graduated with honors this spring with a degree in religion.

\ In Radford, a fireworks show and NASCAR souvenir night are added features as New River Valley Speedway celebrates the July 4 holiday tonight.

The fireworks display will be held at the conclusion of the Wicker Basket 200 racing action. Free U.S. flags will be given to the first 400 children arriving.

Racing action in the Wicker Basket 200 will include 100 laps for the Late Model Stock Car drivers.

Gates open at 2 p.m. Practice gets underway at 4 with qualifying set for 6:15. The first race begin at 8 p.m. Admission is $10 for adults and $1 for children 12 and under.

\ With two races within 48 hours, the Fourth of July weekend is billed as the biggest draw of the 34-race season at Franklin County Speedway.

The Affiliated Electronics 300 on Saturday night will feature races in the six conventional classes - Late Model, Street, Mini, Pure, Rookies, and Any Car. The first race starts at 8 p.m.

Several extras will be added for the Firecracker 500 on Monday night. The Late Models will run three segments of 50, 50, and 20 laps, with first prize payoffs of $1,000, $1,000 and $2,000, respectively. There also is a $3,000 bonus if the same driver wins all three.

Two additional divisions will race on Monday. The Modifieds will make their 1994 debut, and an all-female field will compete in a Powder Puff race.

Monday's race starts at 6 p.m. The 16th annual FCS fireworks display will conclude the racing at 10 p.m. Admission for Saturday is $5 and Monday night is $7.99. Children 10 and under will be admitted free.
