BULLS THRASH BUCS

HOME RUNS and strong pitching lead Durham over Salem, 9-3.

\ The Durham Bulls clubbed three home runs and Jamie Arnold pitched eight solid innings in a 9-3 win over the Salem Buccaneers in a Carolina League game Friday night at Durham Athletic Park.

Arnold (6-4), a first-round draft pick by the Atlanta Braves in 1992, allowed four hits and three runs. He surrendered Danny Clyburn's home run that cleared the 410-foot center-field wall in the second inning and Chance Sanford's solo shot in the sixth. Sanford drove in Mitch House with an eighth-inning groundout.

Hector Roa, Marty Malloy and Tom Waldrop homered for the Bulls, who touched Salem starter Matt Chamberlain (4-9) for eight hits and five runs (four earned) in six innings. Mike Warner had three hits for Durham.

Salem begins a three-game series at Kinston today.

\ BUCSHOTS: The most extensive roster moves of the season transpired Friday. Left-handed pitcher Ted Klamm (2-7. 7.93) was released and left-hander Danny Young (2-0, 7.71) was dispatched to Augusta. From Augusta, right-hander Jose Sosa (2-3, 3.88), right-hander Matt Ryan (2-1, 1.14, 13 saves) and left-hander Chris Peters (4-4, 5.73) were assigned to Salem. Bucs left-hander Terry Farrar was put on the disabled list with a bad ankle. \
