"The course played pretty easily, really," Cooke, 21, said after he added a 1-under-par 71 to his first-round 72 for a 36-hole total of 143 over the 7,238-yard Robert Trent Jones Golf Club course.
Try telling that to the other golfers who started the second round.
Except for a 2-under 70 by two-time former champion Keith Decker of Martinsville that earned him one-third of the runner-up spot at 144, it was a "bogey train" ride for most competitors.
David Oakley of Vienna, one of 12 golfers left on the course because of Thursday's weather, completed a 4-under 68 Friday that tied him for the lead with David Brogan of Lexington. Each then shot a 76 and tied with Decker.
Tommy Mensing of Richmond and Barry McCarty of Alexandria each added a 72 to his 73 and finished at 145. Virginia Tech golfer Curtis Deal of Chesapeake was at 73-73-146.
"A double bogey on the ninth got me on the bogey train," said three-time former champion Tom McKnight of Galax, who shot a 76 and a 71 and was one of four at 147.
Mike Smith of Roanoke, who had a 70 Thursday, had a second-round 78. Veteran J.P. Leigh of Chesapeake "got on the three-putt train" for a 78 and a 149 total.
"I don't think my life expectancy is very long," said defending champion David Partridge of Richmond, who was a 150 after a 77.
Roanoke golfers who qualified for match play starting today included David Hagadorn at 150 and Chris Clemens, one of four who survived a six-way playoff at 151.
