GRACE COVENANT PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH BREAKS GROUND

The congregation of GRACE COVENANT PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH (Presbyterian Church of America) of Blacksburg will break ground for its first church building later this month. The ceremony will be held June 19 at the church's nine-acre site on Shadow Lake Road.

Founded in 1980, the congregation has met in borrowed quarters over the years, most recently sharing a sanctuary with Alleghany Baptist Church. The Rev. Gordon Wollard became the church's fifth pastor last summer.

The new building will be approximately 10,000 square feet and will accommodate 200 worshippers. There also will be rooms for Sunday school and fellowship.

Steve Hill of Blacksburg wants to start a SECOND-SHIFT FELLOWSHIP on Wednesdays, 11 a.m. -12:30 p.m., for people in the Blacksburg and Christiansburg area like himself who typically work 4-12 p.m. "If I feel a need, there's bound to be other people in the community who feel the same," said Hill, who works at Electro -Tec.

The 16th annual ROBERT SHEFFEY MEMORIAL CAMPMEETING gets under way Friday evening and continues through July 15 at the Sheffey campground in Trigg, Va., in Giles County. The Rev. David Hughes, an evangelist from Pennsylvania, will be this year's speaker.

There's a special emphasis this year on activities for children and youth, and Thursday, July 14, will be youth night.

Recording artist Donnie McClurkin - founder of The New York Restoration Choir - will be featured during the second annual MUSIC WORKSHOP AND CONCERT Friday and Saturday at the Radford Church of God in Christ, 206 Russell Ave. Registration: $20 per person; $5 per children's choir member (age 12 and under).

The senior BIBLE BOWL team from Community Christian Church in Newbern will compete nationally in the North American Christian Convention Tuesday through Friday in Orlando, Fla. More than 220 Bible Bowl teams will be on hand for the occasion.

The Newbern team, made up of members in grades 7-12, includes Melissa Blevins, Mandy Byrd, Danny Farris, Kristin Smith and Rob Webb. The team compiled a 37-3 record to gain the first-place trophy. At the tournament May 14 at New Castle, Bible Bowlers had an hour to complete a 400-question test over six New Testament books. Byrd placed first and Blevins sixth.

Junior Bible Bowler Jeff Webb from Newbern competed with the Edgewood junior team of Salem, which also finished in first place for the year. Webb came in third in the junior division tournament at New Castle.

HAPPENINGS:

An old-fashioned camp meeting with evangelist J. B. Shelton continues through July 30 at 7:30 each evening with preaching and gospel music at the Old Gospel Tent in the Pulaski County community of Hiwassee.

Revival services with the Rev. Ralph E. Clark will be held July 9-24, 7 each evening, at the Giles Street Tabernacle, Pearisburg. Clark hopes to conduct other revival services throughout the New River Valley, where he hopes to establish Christian Missionary Alliance Churches in Pulaski, Pearisburg, Radford, Blacksburg, Christiansburg, Floyd and Ironto. ROB SKAER is the new Director of University Ministry at Presbyterian Church of Radford. Skaer - who comes from Illinois - succeeds Ken Locke, who is continuing his education at Princeton. Call him at 639-2585.

CAROL DUNSMORE has retired from her position as director of the Wesley Foundation at Radford University. A successor has not been named.

The REV. DR. NORMAN WITTHUHN, 48, will become pastor of First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) in Pulaski on Sept. 1. For the past five years, he's been pastor at Calvary Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) in Covington.

He will succeed the Rev. C. Maynard Powell who left the congregation in November and is now pastor of First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) in Petersburg.
