QUARLES TO RETIRE AS HEAD OF CENTRAL FIDELITY REGION

J. Carson Quarles will retire Dec. 31 as president of the southwestern region of Central Fidelity National Bank.

He announced his retirement plans to employees of the region at the bank's annual service awards ceremony Thursday night.

He will be succeeded Jan. 1 by Monty Plymale, currently executive vice president and manager of the Southwestern Region Retail Banking Division. Plymale has been with Central Fidelity since 1981.

Quarles will act as a consultant to Central Fidelity for two years after his retirement and will continue as chairman of the southwestern region's board of directors.

Quarles joined Central Fidelity Dec. 1, 1986, to head the region covering the Roanoke Valley, New River Valley and the Abingdon-Chilhowie area.

He directed the $15 million expansion of the branch system in Southwest Virginia. The bank said its share of the regional market increased from 3 percent to 10 percent during Quarles' eight years as president.

Quarles said he approached retirement "with a deep sense of pride and satisfaction with what I have given to banking over the past 37 years and what it has given to me. While I do not intend to totally remove myself from the business and public arenas, I look forward to spending more time with my wife, Norma, my children, my grandchildren, my church, my hobbies and my Boykin spaniel, Brandy."

A native of Buchanan, Quarles attended National Business College before beginning his banking career in 1958.

He started as a commercial credit management trainee with First National Exchange Bank, which later became Dominion Bank, holding a variety of positions. In 1972, he joined Bank of Virginia - now Signet - as executive vice president and senior credit officer. He later became president of Signet's local bank.

Quarles returned to Dominion in 1977 and worked his way through a series of positions until 1984, when he became president of Dominion Bank and executive vice president of Dominion Bankshares Corp.

He resigned those positions in July 1986 and by the end of the year joined Central Fidelity.

He serves on the boards of Mary Baldwin College, Radford University, Trigon Blue Cross/Blue Shield, Consolidated Healthcare Inc., Friendship Manor, Roanoke Valley Development Corp. and Contracting Enterprises.
