HOME SALES IN VIRGINIA INCREASE FOR THE YEAR

Pending home sales in Virginia for the year through May were up 7.62 percent compared to the same five months last year.

The Virginia Association of Realtors reported that 28,750 single-family homes were placed under contract compared to 26,712 for the same period a year ago.

For the month of May, 6,326 houses were placed under contract compared to last May's figure of 6,199, an increase of 2.04 percent.

Edwin C. Hall of Roanoke, president of the association, said continued strong performance by the real estate market "is adding momentum to our general economy." He said mortgage rates should stabilize, creating "very positive market conditions through the second half of the year.
