NEC, SUNDISK JOINING TO DEVELOP `FLASH' CHIP

NEC Corp., Japan's largest maker of semiconductors, and SunDisk Corp. of the United States have agreed to jointly develop a new generation of "flash" computer memory chips, the companies announced Monday.

The companies said they plan to begin marketing 256-megabit flash memories in 1997. The largest flash memory chips currently available hold 16 megabits, or about 16 million units of binary information.
