TENNIS GREAT HOAD DIES

Tributes flowed Monday for former Australian tennis great Lew Hoad, 59, who died on the day Pete Sampras emulated his feat of winning consecutive Wimbledon men's singles titles. Hoad, winner of a total of 13 Grand Slam singles and doubles titles, died in Spain on Sunday after a long battle with leukemia.

Hoad was the first post-war player to win consecutive Wimbledon singles titles, in 1956 and 1957, and won the doubles in 1953, 1955 and 1956.

Noting the timing of his death, his former Davis Cup teammate and 1960 Wimbledon singles champion Neale Fraser said: "Perhaps it was his last hurrah - saying don't forget me, I was one of the greatest."

Many of his contemporaries had been organizing a seniors tournament this month at his Campo de Tenis to raise money for his treatment. Paul McNamee, a former Australian Davis Cup player and 1980 and 1982 Wimbledon doubles champion, said the tournament would be played.
