DRAWING, DRIVING AMONG UPCOMING CLASSES

The Fine Arts Center for the New River Valley, 21 W. Main St., Pulaski, offers two DRAWING CLASSES for seniors this month. Introduction to Drawing is July 11-15, and Intermediate Drawing is July 18-22. Classes run from 2 until 3:45 p.m. The cost for each is $20. Call the Fine Arts Center at 980-7363 for details.

In cooperation with the American Association of Retired Persons, Radford Community Hospital sponsors a 55-ALIVE DRIVING CLASS Aug. 3-4, 9 a.m.-1 p.m., at the Norwood Professional Center in downtown Radford.

Other 55-Alive Driving classes will be held Aug. 11-12, 9 a.m.-1 p.m., at the Bank of Floyd, and Aug. 16-17 at New River Valley Mall's community room.

These classes promote defensive driving techniques. Space is limited. Register by calling the Public Affairs Department at Radford Community Hospital, 731-2380.

New River Valley Agency on Aging processes Senior identification cards Wednesday, July 13, 10 a.m.-2 p.m., for people 60 or older. Bring proof of age and Social Security card. A $1.50 donation is requested.

Register starting Tuesday at 10 a.m. for a trip July 14 to the Old West Dinner Theatre in Bristol to enjoy the buffet and see "Godspell." The van leaves the center at 3 p.m. It's $20 for admission and transportation. (Return about midnight.)

The GILES COUNTY SENIOR CENTER, 1320 Wenonah Ave., Pearisburg, 921-3924:

Play bridge today from 1 to 4 p.m.

Aerobics are held every day at the town pool, 11 a.m.-noon, weather permitting.

Swim therapy is Tuesdays and Thursdays, 1:15 p.m., and Fridays, 9:15 a.m.

Walk Thursdays 9-10 a.m.

Senior identification cards will be made at the center Monday, 11 a.m. to noon, for seniors 60 and older.

The CHRISTIANSBURG SENIOR CENTER, 655 Montgomery St., 382-8173: .

It's off to Bob's Blueberry Farm in Rick Creek today. The van leaves the National Guard Armory, College and Depot streets, at 8:30 a.m. Transportation is $4.

Friday, take the Virginia Dare-Smith Mountain Lake Cruise. The $29 fee includes the cruise, lunch and transportation. The van leaves the armory at 9 a.m.

A free blood-sugar screening is set for Tuesday, 10:30 a.m.-noon, at the center.

A free "mystery movie" shows Tuesday at 10 a.m.

Wednesday, blood pressure checks will be made after senior aerobics at the armory. (Senior aerobics are offered Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, 8-9 a.m., at the armory. There is no charge.)

Legacy Quilt Show applications are available at the center. The show is Sept. 17 during the Wilderness Trail Festival.

The RETIRED AND SENIOR VOLUNTEER PROGRAM, 1 Franklin St., Courthouse Annex, Christiansburg, 382-5775:

RSVP seeks your remembrances of holidays past. Turn in your essays on "Holiday Memories" as soon as possible.

The Shawsville luncheon will be held Monday at noon at White Memorial Church. Volunteers and prospective volunteers are welcome.

The Christiansburg luncheon will be Tuesday at noon at Nellie's Cave Park, Blacksburg. Wear red, white and blue to celebrate Independence Day.

The Christiansburg morning group will visit Heritage Hall on Wednesday, July 13, at 10 a.m. The afternoon group will visit Heritage Hall at 2 p.m.

Donations on the RSVP quilt are being taken weekdays, 9 a.m.-5 pm., at RSVP in Christiansburg.

Visit Valley View Mall on July 15. Transportation is $2 and leaves at 10 a.m. Lunch on your own at the Olive Garden.

The next Road Runner trip is Aug. 3 to Barter Theatre, Abingdon, the Highland Festival and Martha Washington Inn. Trips are first-come, first-served. Itineraries are available at the center.

SENIOR SHORTS:

The deadline is July 29 for New River Valley senior poets to enter original, unpublished poems in the 16th annual poetry contest for seniors. Ten winners will be chosen from Floyd, Giles, Montgomery and Pulaski counties and Radford.

The New River Community College's Office of Continuing Education has details at 674-3607.

Donna Yaffe of the Center for Research in Health Behavior is looking for people 55 and older who do not exercise regularly to participate in a study. For an information packet, call 231-8746.

The federally funded Green Thumb program can help people 55 and older who meet certain income guidelines to find training and work in the New River Valley. The program pays during on-the-job training and for certain college classes.
