INSPECTOR CAN'T FIND CRASH CAUSE

A state-licensed inspector was unable to find the cause of a roller-coaster accident at the Salem Fair in which three Roanoke residents were injured.

At about 8:45 p.m. Sunday, a car on the Zyklon got stuck on the ride's drag brake and a second car rear-ended it, police said. The cars collided a second time as they rolled to a stop.

A 28-year-old woman, a 28-year-old man and an 11-year-old girl were treated at hospitals and released, authorities said.

Danny Abner, who has inspected the fair rides for seven years, said fair operators closed the ride after the accident. The ride was reopened Tuesday, after Abner reinspected and rode it himself. He said he has removed the car that got stuck on the brake system and checks the roller coaster every hour.
