IN SCHOOL

TAYLOR L. JONES, son of Liz and Larry Jones of Roanoke, has been accepted to study visual arts in the summer session at North Carolina School of the Arts.

Jones is a sophomore at The Governor's School and Patrick Henry High School.

\ KRISTI SHANNON HODGE and ELANA DAPHNA FOX were the recipients of college scholarship grants from the Foundation for Roanoke Valley Cave Spring Lions Club. The scholarship fund emphasizes leadership and volunteerism, and each receives a grant of $1,000.

Hodge, a 1994 graduate of Glenvar High School, is a member of the National Honor Society, Spanish National Honor Society, Student Council Association and president of Keyette International. She also played for the junior varsity basketball team and is a three-year member of the varsity track team.

Hodge has volunteered with the city of Salem's Preschool Handicapped Camp for mentally and physically disabled children and has done volunteer work for a battered women's shelter, Special Olympics, Red Cross, AIDS awareness and Adopt-a-Highway.

Fox, a 1994 graduate of Cave Spring High School, is a member of the National Senior Beta Club, Chorale, Knight Notes Choral Group and Jazz Band. She has won many academic, music and performing arts awards, played indoor soccer and was nominated as the Knights of Columbus Outstanding Young Woman of the Year.

Fox has also been an active volunteer with West End Center for Youth, Camelot Nursing Home, Festival in the Park and the Jewish Community Religious School.

\ BRIDGEWATER COLLEGE recently awarded degrees to several Roanoke Valley students.

They are: Elizabeth Kirk Claybrook, daughter of David and Patricia Kirk, art major; Jennifer Adele Lowe, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. George Lowe, sociology major; and David Lynn Pugh, son of the Rev. and Mrs. William Pugh, physics major; all from Roanoke.

Also: Paul Sherman Hickerson, son of Sherman and Juanita Hickerson, health and physical education, from Salem; Jeffrey C. Mills, son of Mr. and Mrs. Harold Mills, art major, from Blue Ridge; and Lance John Carter, son of Mr. and Mrs. Larry Carter, health and physical education, from Daleville.

Lowe, Pugh and Mills all graduated cum laude.

\ WAKE FOREST UNIVERSITY in Winston-Salem, N.C., has awarded bachelor of arts degrees to the following Roanoke students: Marjorie Merriman Clifton, Robert Holmes Gayle and Lawrence Davis Jackson.

Melissa Ann Sigler and Katherine Wendy Ventura, both of Roanoke, received bachelor of science degrees.

\ MARY WASHINGTON COLLEGE has awarded degrees to the following Roanoke students: Mark David Tanis, business administration; Tiffany Louise Bond, computer science and math; Burton Lee Joyner II, chemistry; Christopher Michael Lazzuri, business administration and economics; Jill Kristine Trussell, biology; Brian Matthews Bloxom, business administration; Kimberley Adrienne Harris, English; Karen Janis Mallan, English; and Shawn Matthew Simpson, international affairs. Renee Diane Cline of Salem received a degree in biology.

\ ROBERT L. MARTINET of Roanoke has received the Distinguished Alumnus Award from the college of Engineering at Ohio State University in Columbus.

Martinet is vice president of operations for FiberCom Inc.

\ FREED-HARDEMAN UNIVERSITY has named several Roanoke Valley students to its honor lists.

Lisa Bennett, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. George Freeland of Roanoke and a business administration major, was named to the dean's list.

Stephanie McLaughlin, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth McLaughlin of Roanoke and an arts and humanities major; and Shane Warner, son of Mr. and Mrs. Richard Warner of Vinton and a biology major, were both named to the president's list.

\ MATTHEW CAMPBELL, son of Blair and Kate Campbell and a student at Roanoke Catholic School, has been named an All-American Scholar by the United States Achievement Academy.

The program was designed to offer recognition to superior students who excel in the academic disciplines.

\ YEN THUY LIEU and MATTHEW SCOTT CARTY have each been awarded $1,000 scholarships by the Junior League of Roanoke Valley, Virginia Inc. Two Mary Terry Goodwin Kuyk scholarships are awarded each year, one to a male and one to a female high school student in recognition of outstanding volunteer service.

Lieu, a Patrick Henry High School senior who arrived in the United States four years ago, works as a volunteer with Roanoke's Refugee Resettlement Program. She will attend Hollins College in the fall and major in accounting and international relations.

Carty serves as a volunteer with several groups, including his church, Roanoke Area Ministries, the Salvation Army and Festival in the Park. The Northside High senior will major in architecture in the fall at the University of Virginia.

\ ASHLEY ELIZABETH ATKINSON, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Gary R. Atkinson son of Roanoke, won first place in Virginia and honorable mention in the nation for the junior high literature division of the 1994 PTA Reflections Contest.

Atkinson is an eighth-grade student at Cave Spring Junior High School.

\ MICHAEL JOSEPH KOLNOK III , son of Michael J. Kolnok of Roanoke, received a $1,000 R. Robert Dale Scholarship from Moose International Inc. He will attend Randolph-Macon College in Ashland.

Kolnok is a 1994 graduate of Roanoke Catholic School.

\ WILLIAM E. CALLAHAN and DARREN S. HALEY have received law degrees from the School of Law at Washington and Lee University. Callahan, of Roanoke, graduated magna cum laude. Haley, of Salem, is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth Haley of Salem.

\ ROSS IAN DORNBUSH, son of Edwin and Jeannette Dornbush of Roanoke, has received his certificate in theological studies from Erskine College and Seminary in Due West, S.C.. Dornbush is a member of the Associate Reformed Presbyterian denomination.

\ JEFFREY LEE ELMORE of Roanoke received a bachelor of arts degree in Christian ministry/family life recreation from Ouachita Baptist University in Arkadelphia, Ark.

\ CHRISTOPHER M. SHELTON, son of Paulina B. Shelton of Roanoke and Tommie E. Shelton of Irmo, S.C., received a bachelor of science degree in chemistry from Furman University in Greenville, S.C. He also qualified for the American Chemical Society degree.

\ LOUISE CLARKE, coordinator of Programs for Academically Talented students, K-12 in Roanoke , recently was named the president of the Virginia Association for the Education of the Gifted. The association provides advocacy and support for programs designed to meet the needs of high-ability students in the public and private schools. As president, Clarke will serve on the State Advisory Board for Gifted Education.

\ JOSH POINTS, son of Mr. and Mrs. Steve Points of Roanoke, has been chosen to attend the National Association of Points Student Councils Conference in Chesterfield, Mo. Points, a rising junior at Woodberry Forest School in Woodberry Forest, was elected president of the Virginia Student Council Association at the association's state convention in March.

\ GEORGE BRENT SHORTER, son of Margaret P. and George W. Shorter of Roanoke, received a Pulp and Paper Merit Scholarship of $3,700 from the Pulp and Paper Foundation Inc. for studies at the North Carolina State University College of Forest Services. The Cave Spring High School graduate also is a John T. Caldwell Merit Finalist and will major in pulp and paper science.

\ HIDDEN VALLEY JUNIOR HIGH SCHOOL has announced the names of its students who received honors in the 1994 Nationwide Latin Examination.

Sally Hanson and Matt Schroeder won summa cum laude gold medals for their high scores. Silver medals, or maxima cum laude, went to Missy Lauer and Elizabeth Nelson.

Certificates of merit, magna cum laude, went to Kim Amos, Josh Casker, Helen Colosimo, Scott Keilman, Alexa Thacker and Dana Woods-Allen. Cum laude certificates of merit went to Scott Greenway, Lori Hartman, Colin Sigmon, Stephen Squires and Toby Townsend.

\ DAVIDSON COLLEGE, in Davidson, N.C., recently announced the names of its Roanoke-area graduates.

They are: Richard Kevin Garbee, son of Richard and Linda Garbee of Salem, political science major and a 1990 graduate of North Cross School; Sara Kathryn Ayers, daughter of Ronald and Jodi Ayers of Roanoke, psychology major and 1990 graduate of Patrick Henry High School; Matthew Maxwell Laughon, son of Kenneth C. and Sally Laughon of Roanoke, biology major, magna cum laude, and a 1990 graduate of North Cross School; and Del Arden Turner, son of Betty Shepherd of Roanoke, economics major and a 1990 graduate of Patrick Henry High School.

\ AMANDA GAIL FRAZIER, daughter of Dr. and Mrs. Edwin R. Frazier of Roanoke, has been named to the dean's list at Mars Hill College in Mars Hill, N.C.

\ NICOLE MILKO, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Carl N. Milko of Roanoke, recently received a bachelor of arts degree from Salem Academy & College in Winston-Salem, N.C.

\ HAMPDEN-SYDNEY COLLEGE has named three Roanoke students to its dean's list.

They are W. Scott Thomasson, son of Mrs. Judy N. Ross; Ian McDade, son of Mr. and Mrs. Neil McDade; and Jeffrey M. Shepard, son of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph J. Shepard.

\ RANDOLPH-MACON COLLEGE has announced the names of its Roanoke-area graduates. Receiving bachelor of arts degrees are John Edward Morgan, Rodney Allen Jefferson, Brian Luke Fannin and Eric Benjamin Tull, all of Roanoke.

Barbara Ann Robertson of Salem received a bachelor of science degree.

\ WASHINGTON AND LEE UNIVERSITY has announced the names of its Roanoke graduates.

They are Amy E. Brown, daughter of Daniel and Suzanne Brown, major in religion; and Anne W. Matthews, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. J.A.Matthews Jr., major in biology.
