Hershman played baseball and football at Randolph-Macon. Playing defensive back in football, he was Division II Virginia Independent School All-State after intercepting seven passes.
Hershman was the leading scorer, getting touchdowns by just about every possible way on a football field. He returned interceptions, caught passes and returned fumbles for touchdowns. His longest touchdown was a 90-yard interception return.
He was a pitcher in baseball, going 5-3 in a year that included a one-hitter and a no-hitter. He averaged more than one strikeout per inning and hit .407. When not pitching, Hershman played outfield.
Academically, Hershman was a dean's list performer. He will attend West Virginia University. Hershman resides at 2816 Titleist Drive in Salem.
