Botetourt County Public Schools and the Roanoke Academy of Medicine Auxiliary received community service awards. Botetourt Schools was recognized for contributing over 8,000 items to Operation Santa Claus; and the auxiliary for providing parenting classes and other services to children and families involved in the Child Health Investment Partnership.
The Roanoke County Police Department was named employer of the year for instituting "Psychological Fitness for Duty" evaluations.
Dr. Stephen A. Morgan received the medical award for his service as a consulting physician at Community Resource and Counseling Center.
Henry Altice and Dr. R. Michael Marsh received public policy awards. Altice was recognized for his leadership in the Coalition for Mentally Disabled Citizens of Virginia; and Marsh for striving for the provision of mental health services for children in this community.
The Rev. Larry E. Sprouse received the Robert A. Croxson Memorial Award for his work in pastoral counseling, mental health education, advocacy for children's mental health issues and promotion of mental health issues within clergy circles.
Liz Scott and Mary Barrow received the Unsung Hero Award. Scott was honored for her work with the Community Living Club at St. John's Episcopal Church; and Barrow for chairing the association's membership campaign.
Eric Fitzpatrick and Lewis-Gale Hospital received the MHA Partnership Award. Fitzpatrick was honored for donating a limited edition print "Walking Toward the Light" as a fund raiser for the association; and the hospital, for co-sponsoring a monthly series of presentations for area clergy.
Nell Thompson received the MHA Distinguished Service Award for writing an activities guidebook for association staff and volunteers who work with residents in homes for adults.
Katie Van Patten received the MHA Committee Chair of the Year for chairing the Community Education Committee.
Janet McKinney received the MHA Volunteer of the Year Award for chairing the association's Long-Range Planning Committee and assisting with numerous association-sponsored programs and activities.
Julie M. Danstrom received the MHA Medal of Honor for her service as the Association's President during 1993. This is the second time in the Mental Health Association's 47-year history that the medal was awarded.
Virginia senior pageant seeking contestants
The second annual Ms. Virginia Senior Citizen Pageant is seeking women 55 and older to compete as contestants.
The pageant, which will be held Aug. 25-27 at Patrick Henry High School's Clara Black Auditorium, will showcase senior women.
Contestants will be judged on poise, fashion and talent. The winner will be sent to Joliet, Ill. in October for the Ms. National Senior Citizen Pageant.

Openings for senior day care services available
The Adult Care Center of Roanoke Valley has limited openings for it's senior day care services.
The agency serves older persons requiring assistance or supervision during the day and helps families care for impaired seniors.
Adult care offers activities and support in an informal home-like atmosphere during the day, seven days a week. Socialization and mental and physical exercise for the seniors are all part of the program.
The center is one of nearly 40 such places in Virginia and has served over 500 families during its 11 years of operation. For more information about the program, call Annette Clark at 983-1026.
Roanoker wins valley chess club tournament
Bryan Burke of Roanoke recently won the Roanoke Valley Chess Club Championship.
Burke defeated defending champion Felix McCain of Lynchburg with a score of 4 1/2 points in a five-round swiss.
Roanoker is delegate to national association
Francis X. "Frank" Hayes Jr. of Roanoke has been elected to a three-year term in the House of Delegates of the American Association of Homes and Services for the Aging.
Hayes is executive vice president of Virginia Lutheran Homes Inc.
As a delegate to the group, Hayes will help select officers and members of the association's board of directors and assist the board in long-range planning, governance and clarifying policy.
PH student's drawing hangs at U.S. Capital
A pencil drawing by Monica Jones, a Patrick Henry High School junior, is on display in the United States Capitol.
"The Wedding" was the winner of a contest sponsored by Rep. Bob Goodlatte and will represent the Sixth Congressional District in a national art exhibit called "An Artistic Discovery."
The piece also won first place in the High School Art Competition held by the Roanoke Arts Commission.
Jones is a two-time winner of the districtwide competition sponsored by Goodlatte.
