Sharlene S. Price, president of the Roanoke Valley Reading Council, recently received several awards Price at the International Reading Association Conference in Toronto, Canada.
Price was awarded for increasing membership in the local chapter, and for her work with community projects, international projects, the Celebrate Literacy Program and the Young Writer's Project.
The council has more than 800 members from Roanoke, Salem, and the counties of Roanoke, Craig, Botetourt and Franklin.
Traffic Safety Board names award recipients
The Blue Ridge Community Traffic Safety Board has announced the following area award recipients for projects in 1993:
Brenda A. Altman, 1993 District Traffic Safety Volunteer of the Year for establishing the Smith Mountain Lake Mothers Against Drunk Driving Chapter.
Roger S. Fuller, Outstanding Community Leadership Award for setting a high standard for DUI arrests and convictions and for outstanding volunteer efforts in the Roanoke Valley.
Roanoke Area Youth Substance Abuse Coalition, Outstanding State Project Award for sponsoring campaigns to generate support for improvements to Virginia's DUI laws.
1993 Regional Drunk and Drugged Driving Prevention Campaign, Outstanding District Project Award for a campaign aimed at deterring impaired driving during the holiday season.
1993 Summer Safety Expo of the Roanoke Valley, Outstanding Community Project Award for an expo aimed at educating the general public about transportation safety.
Roanoke City Police Department, Outstanding D.A.R.E. Project Award for sponsoring the 1993 Roanoke City D.A.R.E. Camp.
Business awards went to the Insurance Women's Association of Roanoke for sponsoring the 1994 Southwest Virginia REACH Conference and to the Roanoke Gas Co. for its first alcohol-free Christmas party.
PH student's drawing hangs at U.S. Capital
A pencil drawing by Monica Jones, a Patrick Henry High School junior, is on display in the United States Capitol.
"The Wedding" was the winner of a contest sponsored by Rep. Bob Goodlatte and will represent the Sixth Congressional District in a national art exhibit called "An Artistic Discovery."
The piece also won first place in the High School Art Competition held by the Roanoke Arts Commission.
Jones is a two-time winner of the districtwide competition sponsored by Goodlatte.
