SUIT CHALLENGES CANDICACY DEADLINE

A college instructor has filled a lawsuit in federal court challenging Virginia's filing deadline for independent candidates to get on the ballot.

George R. Wood, 47, of Stuart, wants to run as an independent for the U.S. Senate. He charges the June 14 deadline for filing petitions came to early.

The lawsuit, filed Tuesday in U.S. District Court in Danville, claims the deadline is arbitray. It was filed against Michael G. Brown, secretary of the state Board of Elections.
