The victory in the 16-17 age division gave Varney the distinction of being the only player to win two age groups at the Haley. Varney, who will be a senior in the fall at Glenvar High School, won the 14-15 crown last year.
Varney, who had a 3-under-par 68 on Wednesday in the first round, finished with a 36-hole total of 1-under 141 to win by four shots over Ryan Ketron of Roanoke. Ketron had a final-round 71. David Lipes of Midlothian was third at 146.
Roanoker Lee Taylor took the 12-13 crown, shooting 75-72-147 to outdistance runner-up Ryan Patterson of Roanoke by 11 shots. Russ Johnston of Pearisburg was third at 161.
South Boston's Matthew Anderson shot 149 take the 14-15 crown. Salem's Tommy Lesperance, who teamed with Varney on Glenvar's 1994 Group A state championship team, finished in a tie for second with Roanoke's Jason Orlando at 151.
Richmond's Mandy Martin won the girls' division, shooting 82-77-159.

nThe U.S. Softball Association women's National Invitational Tournament will be played this weekend at the Moyer Sports Complex in Salem.
The tournament, which opens at 7:30 p.m. today includes some of the top-ranked Class A clubs in the nation among its 30 teams. Class A uses an unlimited home run rule, and some players will test Moyer's 300-foot fence distances in the tournament. The NIT field, led by 14 Class A teams, also includes several Class B and C teams seeking USSSA regional berths.
The tournament has entries from Virginia, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, Ohio and Tennessee. The USSSA women's NIT is one of the qualifying events for the 16-team USSSA Women's World Series, scheduled Labor Day weekend at the Moyer facility along with the Women's Class A national tournament.
The World Series is the premier event of women's softball.
