The New Dublin settlement - once a thriving trading center near Ingles Ferry - now lies beneath Claytor Lake.
The earliest known New Dublin Presbyterian Church building was constructed in 1781 on the church's present site, not far off Virginia 100 north of Dublin, on land given by Col. Joseph Cloyd. The present church, built in 1875, is the third to house the New Dublin congregation.
In 1964, New Dublin Presbyterian broke away from a group of churches served by one pastor and became an independent congregation. Its first pastor - serving his first church - was the Rev. John Sadler, who will preach at the homecoming. He now is pastor of Yorkminster Presbyterian Church in the Tidewater region.
The present pastor, the Rev. Ben Trawick, is also in his first pastorate and has been at New Dublin for about a year. He said the church has assembled "numerous artifacts" to display at the homecoming. "A lot of them we just stumbled upon," he said.
The collection includes old hitching nails from trees around the church and some old books found in the building's basement, among them an 1840s edition of "Rip Van Winkle" with a four-leaf clover pressed within its pages.
Church member Gary Millar said the church also located an old leatherbound ledger containing names of members dating back to the 1850s. "A lot of these families are still here - fourth or fifth generation," he said.
The church has approximately 175 members. For more information, call Trawick at 674-6147.
