MAN GUILTY OF ATTACKING OFFICER

A Salem man charged with attempted capital murder of a Roanoke police officer was convicted Friday of reduced charges.

As part of an agreement reached in Roanoke Circuit Court, Donald Glenn Law pleaded guilty to bodily injury of a police officer and brandishing a firearm.

He will receive a sentence of at least five years, but the agreement leaves prosecutors free to argue for up to the maximum of 21 years, Assistant Commonwealth's Attorney Ann Gardner said.

Law, 37, was being sought by police the night of March 13 after he allegedly refused to go through a metal detector at a Northwest Roanoke nightclub and then brandished a handgun at the bouncer, Gardner said.

When police caught up to him a short time later at a home on Forrest Park Boulevard, Law told officer C.C. Perkins he was armed and reached for a gun under his vest. At that point, Perkins grabbed Law and the gun was dropped during a struggle.

Perkins testified Friday that Law grabbed his gun and pulled it almost entirely from the holster before backup police officers arrived and apprehended him. The officer injured his neck during the struggle for his gun.

Perkins testified that when he saw Law a short time later at the Police Department, the man told him: "You're lucky. I almost got you. I'll get you next time."
