HABITAT MEETING

Habitat for Humanity, a nonprofit Christian-based housing ministry that helps people improve their living conditions, will have an informational meeting for Bedford city and county residents Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. at the Saunders Grove Church of the Brethren on Virginia 754. The first Partner Family has been selected, and plans for securing land and building the first house are underway.

In addition, the Moneta Area Satellite of the Greater Lynchburg Habitat for Humanity is taking steps to become fully affiliated with the parent organization, Habitat for Humanity International. Volunteers are needed for the Board of Directors and committees.

Habitat is dedicated to creating simple, decent and affordable homes in partnership with families in need. Construction and renovation projects are a cooperative effort with donations of volunteer labor and materials and involve an affordable down payment coupled with a minimum of 300 hours of "sweat equity" by the recipients. The houses are purchased at no-profit and no-interest over a period of 10 to 20 years, and monthly mortgage payments are "recycled" to build more houses.

Baha'i observance

The Baha'is of the Roanoke Valley will join the Baha'is world-wide today at noon in sacred observances that commemorate the Martyrdom of the Bab, the Herald of the Baha'i faith.

The ministry of the Bab created a great religious and social upheaval throughout Persia. He stated that his primary mission was to prepare the world for the coming of the Great One who would fulfill the messianic prophecies of the world's major religions and whose teachings would usher in a new world order. Baha'is believe that Baha'u'llah (Glory of God) is the one foretold by the bab and the one promised by the world's religious holy books.
