VA. BIKE SERIES CROWNS WINNERS

Christina Baum of Blacksburg won the fifth and final race of the Virginia Mountain Bike State Championships Sunday in Blacksburg and was crowned overall champion of the women's expert class.

Baum accumulated 109 points in the five races to dominate the overall standings. Michele Lepard was second with 65 points.

Jesse Davis of North Carolina was the series champion in the men's expert class, despite a fifth-place finish in Sunday's final 26-mile race.

Davis, a native of Virginia, accumulated 99 points to outdistance Thomas Jenkins, who finished with second with 88.

Bill Moore was the race winner Sunday, boosting him to third in the final standings with 72 points.

The Roanoke Stars 12-and-under girls' basketball team lost an opening-round game Saturday at the Amateur Athletic Union national championships in New Orleans.

Gina Guthrie scored 11 points for the Stars, who fell 54-25 to Indiana Finest, and now enter pool play in the tournament.
