BISHOP, Virginia Miles, 74, of Christiansburg, died Monday, July 11, 1994 in Roanoke Memorial Hospital. She is survived by her husband, Carl S. Bishop; two sons, Carl S. Bishop Jr., Roanoke, Bernard Jackson Bishop, Christiansburg; two daughters, Ruth Wilson, Mary V. Hawkins, both of Charleston, S.C.; a brother, Claude J. Miles, Christiansburg; three sisters, Ethel Iddings, Radford, Cornelia Wiley, Christiansburg, Ruth B. Wilkerson, Lynchburg. BREEDING, Grover Linkous, 57, of Pembroke, died at his home Monday morning, July 11, 1994 following a long illness. Born in Maybrook, Giles County, Va. on September 26, 1926, he was a son of the late James Luther Sr. and Virgie Mae Cumbee Breeding. He retired disabled from the National Gypsum Co. in Gold Bond, Va. He was a member of Lucas Memorial Christian Church. Surviving are his wife, Lois Songer Breeding; four sons, Darrell Breeding, Timothy Breeding, Frederick Breeding, and Travis Breeding, all of Pembroke; one daughter, Beverly M. Breeding, Pembroke; one granddaughter, Amanda Breeding, Pembroke; one brother, James Luther Breeding Jr., Maybrook; three sisters, Effie Sarver, Maybrook, Rosette Dowdy and Eller Breeding, both of Pembroke. Funeral services will be conducted Thursday at 11 a.m. in the Kendall Funeral Home Chapel in Pembroke, with the Rev. James Walker offi ciating. Burial will be in Birchlawn Burial Park, Pearisburg. CHRISTLEY, Milan H., 83, of Salem, died of cancer on Saturday, July 9, 1994, at his daughter's home in Fairfax, Va. A resident of Salem for 52 years, Mr. Christley was born in Back Creek, Roanoke County, Va. He retired from Carter Machinery Company as a used equipment salesman. In retirement, he worked for John Deere, Wimmer's Log Homes, Winn Dixie and Food Lion. Survivors include his wife, Janey Thora Christley, Salem; three children, Milan R. Christley, American Fork, Utah, Marietta C. Larson, Fairfax, Gilford E. Christley, St. Louis, Mo.; three brothers; three sisters; 15 grandchildren. The family will receive friends on Friday, July 15, from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home. DAVIS, L. V., 60, of Route 1, Goodview, died Monday, July 11, 1994, at his residence. He was born in Lee County on November 12, 1933, a son of Gracie Reynolds Davis and the late Shirley Davis. He was a member of Southside Baptist Church. In addition to his mother, he is survived by his wife, Ellen Holdren Davis; four sons, Larry V. Davis and Billy Ray Davis, both of Powhatan, Shirley L. Davis and Kenneth W. Davis, both of Richmond; three daughters, Cindi Gray, Salem, Pam Amos, Rocky Mount, Rhonda Shockley, Blue Ridge; four sisters, Hazel Reed, Eva Oliver, Jean Harvey, Chilcie Leimberger, all of Richmond; 13 grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews. EDMONDS, Robert Francis, (Bob), 70, of Roanoke, died Monday, July 11, 1994. Bob was a veteran of the United States Marine Corps having served during World War II and was retired from Magic City Ford Company. He was a member of Westminster Presbyterian Church In America and was preceded in death by his wife, Frances B. Edmonds. Surviving are one daughter and son-in-law, Linda E. and Larry D. Dudley Jr., Roanoke; three sons and two daughters-in-law, Rev. Edwin H. and Alice W. Edmonds, Martinsburg, W.Va., Charles F. and Cindy F. Edmonds, Botetourt, Mark T. ELMORE, Nannie D., 98, of New Castle, died Tuesday, July 12, 1994, at Brian Center Nursing Home, Fincastle. She is preceded in death by her husband, Brad M. Elmore; and sons, Grady H. Elmore and Burrel M. Elmore. Surviving are two daughters-in-law, Thelma Elmore, New Castle and Anna Elmore, Narrows; 6 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren, 8 great-great-grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews. HALL, Nancy Warner Byrum, 85, of Marion, died Monday evening, July 11, 1994, in the Birdmont Manor in Wytheville, Va. She was a native of Wythe County, Va. was of the Baptist faith and the widow of Rex Randolph Hall. Surviving are two sons, the Rev. Julius Randolph Hall Sr., Morganton, N. C. and the Rev. Troy Reynolds Hall, Nottingham, Penn.; five daughters, Mrs. Norman (Nannie Elizabeth) Sylvester, Mrs. Marion (Barbara) Matthews Jr., both of Wytheville, Mrs. Cecil (Frances) Gravely, Mrs. Ed (Peggy) Powers, both of Marion, and Mrs. Spence (Kathy) Lyon, Nashville, Tenn.; 33 grandchildren; 73 great-grandchildren; and 11 great-great-grandchildren. HAYNES, William Alvis, 87, of 216 Lake Street, Pulaski, died Tuesday, July 12, 1994 in Radford Community Hospital. Born May 30, 1907, in Henry County, Va., he was the son of the late Issac Newton Haynes and Lucy Wells Haynes. He was a retired employee of the Life Insurance Company of Virginia, was active in the Thornspring Ruritan Club and the Radford and Pulaski Kiwanis Clubs, a member of the First Churc h of the Brethren, Pulaski. He is survived by his wife, Louise Miller Haynes; two daughters, Nancy Hall, LaPlace, Louisana, and Susan Haynes Borson, Napa, California; one stepdaughter, Dana Kegley Spraker, Pulaski; one stepson, Tom Kegley, Richmond, Va.; one brother, J. Louis Haynes, Clermont, Fla.; two sisters, Ella Law, Lynchburg, Ora Martin, Bassett; ten grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by two wives, Geneva Martin Haynes and Jean Fulcher Haynes; also two children, William Lowell Haynes and Barbara Ann Haynes Barber. Funeral services will be held Friday at 11 a.m. from Thomas M. Seagle & Sons Funeral Home with the Rev. Karl Reese officiating. HUNT, Evelyn Preston, of Brandon Oaks, died Tuesday, July 12, 1994. She was a member of the First Baptist Church where she was active for many years. Mrs. Hunt was a member of the Margaret Lynn Lewis Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution. Survivors include her husband, John Meekin Hunt; her daughter and son-in-law, Harriet Hunt Little and Harold Little Jr., Fincastle; one grandson, Ian Little, Richmond. KINSEY, Hartselle DeBurney, (``Sox""), 48, of Scarsdale, N.Y., formerly of Roanoke, died Saturday, July 9, 1994 at his home. A pioneer in the petro-chemical field, Mr. Kinsey played a critical role in the Manhattan Project during World War II. In 1966, he retired as vice president of the Union Carbide Corporation after a 42 year career. He was married to the former Catharine Koontz, who died in 1984. Mr. Kinsey was born in Roanoke, Va. in 1901. He graduated from Roanoke College, received his master's degree in chemical engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and was awarded an honorary doctorate from Roanoke College. Mr. Kinsey began his career with the first Carbide Chemicals plant (later to become part of the Union Carbide Corporation) in Clendenin, W. Va. He was assistant superintendent of this plant in its new location in Charleston, W. Va. He later became superintendent of the Union Carbide Corporation (UCC) plant in 1934 in Whiting, Ind., where he remained for 10 years. During World War II, at the government's request, he played a major role in the Manh attan Project in Oak Ridge, Tenn. He served as plant manager and general superintendent of the gaseous diffusion plant, which produced the major component for the atomic bomb. At the peak of its operation, the plant (K-25) employed 12, 500 people. He is credited with speeding the date the plant began production through his suggestions for simplifying the procedures. Following the war, Mr. Kinsey was transferred to New York, where he remained until his retirement in 1966. During his career with UCC he was vice president of the Chemicals Company, president of the Olefins Division and vice president of the corporation. Following his retirement, Mr. Kinsey served several terms as a consultant with the International Executive Service Corps. Mr. and Mrs. Kinsey served two assignments in Taiwan and one in Tehran, Iran. Part of his responsibility was a special consultant in pollution controls. In addition to community service, Mr. Kinsey was a member of the Board of Roanoke College in Salem for 25 years and continued to serve as Trustee Emeritus until his death. He was the chairman of two presidential search committees during his tenure on the board. Mr. Kinsey was a member of the Scarsdale Congregational Church, where he served two terms on the Board of Trustees. Mr. Kinsey was a life member of the American Chemical Society. He belonged to the Society of the Chemical Industry and the Chemists Club of New York. He was a member of the Sigma Chi fraternity and the MIT Alumni Association. He belonged to the Sons of the American Revolution, the Old Guard of White Plains and the Scarsdale Golf Club. Mr. Kinsey is survived by four daughters, JoAnn (Mrs. William ) Storey, Easton, Md., Louise (Mrs. Philip) Clark, Scarsdale, N.Y., Carol (Mrs. Henry) Paiste, South Salem, N.Y., and Melissa (Mrs. James) Mathews, Norfolk. Also surviving are 12 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. A memorial service will be held Thursday at 2 p.m. at the Scarsdale Congregational Church. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Hospice of Westchester or to Roanoke College, Salem, Va. 24153, where a fund has been established in Mr. Kinsey's name.

MILLER, John Jefferson, Sr., 86, of Pembroke, died at his home, Monday , July 11, 1994. Born in Craig County on August 26, 1907, he was a son of the late Dr. James W. and Anna Sibold Miller. ""Jeff"" was retired as a supervisor with RAAP Hercules Powder Co. and was a faithful member of the Pembroke Christian Church, serving as treasurer for 25 years, on the Administrative Board and as an Elder and Deacon. He was president of the Sibold Clan Reunion, a member of the Pembroke Ruritan Club, and a member of the first Pembroke Town Council. For 64 years, he has been a member of Castle Rock Lodge No. 334 AF & AM in Pembroke. Surviving are his wife of 55 years, Lucille Lashley Miller; one son and daughter -in-law, John J Jr. and Bonnie Thomas Miller, Lawrenceville; one grandson, John Jefferson Miller, III, Richmond; and a sister, Lousie Miller Robinson, Pembroke. PATTERSON, Elwood, 87, of Buena Vista, died Monday, July 11, 1994 in Shenandoah Valley Health Care Center. Born September 22, 1906 in Buena Vista, he was the son of the late Charles McClung Patterson and Deliah Clements Patterson. He was a veteran of World War II; a member of American Legion Post 126 and a member of St. John's United Methodist Church. He was predeceased by four brothers and a sister, Hansford Patterson, Raymond Patterson, Lawrence Patterson, Curtis Patterson, and Effie Patterson Wiseman. ROTH, Ted Alex, 25, of Norfolk, died July 10, 1994, as a result of a tragic automobile accident. Ted graduated magna cum laude in Accounting from Virginia Tech in 1990 where he served the community as a member, officer and life member of the Virginia Tech Rescue Squad. Ted's resolve and caring way of life led him to medical school at Eastern Virginia Medical School (EVMS) in Norfolk. Ted represented his future profession as a student delegate member of the American Medical Association. He was active as co-president of the Emergency Medical Club and the Family Medicine Interest Group of EVMS. He also served as an associate member of the Nansemond Suffolk Volunteer Rescue Squad, Suffolk. Ted is survived by his wife, Anita Marie, daughter of Dr. and Mrs. Eric Maybach, Warrenton; his parents, William and Linda Roth, Fairfax Station; his sisters, Sandy Roth Smibert, Atlanta, Ga. and Holly Roth, Blacksburg; and all the family and friends whose spirit he deepened. A memorial service was held July 11, 1994, at the Church of the Holy Family, Virginia Beach. The family will receive friends on Wednesday, July 13 from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Moser Funeral Home, 233 Broadview Ave., Warrenton, Va. SMITH, Robert Glasgow (``Rob""), 86, of Lexington, died Monday, July 11, 1994, in the Heritage Hall Nursing Home. Mr. Smith was born March 27, 1908, in Rockbridge County. A son of the late Poague and Ida Zollman Smith. He was a member of the Poplar Hill Presbyterian Church. WHITE, Mary Alice, of Cumberland, Md., died July 11, 1994 at Memorial Hospital in Cumberland, Md. She was a housewife and a member of Bedford Road Baptist Church in Cumberland. She wa the daughter of the late James F. Brown, Sr. and Barbara Ann Neal Brown. She is also preceded in death by one daughter, Barbara E. White; two brothers, William and George Brown; and one sister, Florence Farewell. Survivors are her husband of 58 years, Ralph ""Jack"" White; one son, Charles E. White and wife, Carol, Delran, N.J.; three daughters, Betty Crotty and husband, Bob, Collinsville, Jane Hudson and husband, Jerry, Port Deposit, Md., Anna Lee Graham and husband, Raymond, Cumberland, Md.; two brothers, James F. WOOD, Curtis Board, 84, of Roanoke, died Tuesday, July 12, 1994. He was retired from the U.S. Postal Service and was a former employee of Garst Brothers Dairy and Pet Milk Co. He was a member of Riverdale Baptist Church for over 50 years and served as a deacon and was a member of the Fellowship Bible Class. Mr. Wood was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, having served with the Ninth Infantry in France. Surviving are his wife of 64 years, Ora B. Wood; two sons and daughters-in-law, Kenneth L. and Gloria C. Wood, Wilmington, N.C., Walter L. and Janet C.
