He cited more trips for seniors and a music program as two new senior program possibilities. "Transportation is one of the biggest difficulties for seniors," he said.
Jim Moore, a member of the advisory committee that's been working with Winfrey's department on senior activities, said he'd like to see "a home away from home" for Blacksburg's older population. He estimated 5,000 seniors live in Montgomery County.
The Retired and Senior Volunteer Program in Christiansburg needs YARD SALE ITEMS for its sale July 22, 9 a.m., at the former Angle's lot on Main Street in Christiansburg. Housewares, clothing in good condition, toys, furniture and books are welcome. Drop items by the RSVP office in the Courthouse Annex or call the office at 382-5775, to arrange for pickup. Money raised goes for new van tires.
The Blacksburg SENIOR DISCUSSION GROUP meets July 21 at 10 a.m. at the Blacksburg Community Center, 725 Patrick Henry Drive. Officer Bradbery of the Blacksburg Police Department will speak on personal safety for seniors and security services that the local police provide for seniors.
The Radford chapter American Association of Retired Persons will hold a POT LUCK SUPPER July 20, 5 p.m., at the Radford Senior Center, 27 First St. Seniors age 50 and older are invited to bring their favorite food. Accordionist Betty Jane Craig will provide the entertainment.

In cooperation with the American Association of Retired Persons, Radford Community Hospital sponsors a 55-ALIVE DRIVING CLASS Aug. 3-4, 9 a.m.-1 p.m., at the Norwood Professional Center in downtown Radford.
Other 55-Alive Driving classes will be held Aug. 11-12, 9 a.m.-1 p.m., at the Bank of Floyd, and Aug. 16-17 at New River Valley Mall's community room.
These classes promote defensive driving techniques. Space is limited. Register by calling the Public Affairs Department at Radford Community Hospital, 731-2380.

The deadline is July 29 for New River Valley senior poets to enter original, unpublished poems in the 16th annual poetry contest for senior citizens. Ten winners will be chosen from Floyd, Giles, Montgomery and Pulaski counties and Radford.

The federally funded Green Thumb program can help people 55 and over who meet certain income guidelines to find training and work in the New River Valley. The program pays during on-the-job training and for certain college classes.
