NEARLY 100 STUDENTS TO ATTEND GOVERNOR'S SCHOOL IN FALL

The Southwest Virginia Governor's School will open Aug. 25 with 98 students, its largest enrollment, commuting from participating counties in the region.

The school's governing board Tuesday elected Giles County Superintendent Robert McCracken as its superintendent-in-charge. He succeeds Wythe County Superintendent James Vaught, who has held the post for two years.

Pat Duncan, the school's director, reported that its Educational Foundation will seek $5,000 from businesses in its service area to upgrade its computer technology. She said the cost of bringing it to the point where it should be is estimated at $100,000.

The foundation is a support group organized to support the school. Duncan said the state is not providing enough money to upgrade the technology and there are fewer computers available for the growing number of students.

"They can't get to the computers while they're here sometimes," she said. "It's frustrating for them."

Duncan said the incoming juniors for 1994-95 will get a science field trip to Wallops Island Aug. 10-13.
