Grant for scientist
BLACKSBURG - Mallika D. Ilindra of Sumi Tech Inc. is one of seven Virginia scientists in line to receive U.S. Department of Energy Small Business Innovation Research grants.
Ilindra plans investigate the feasibility of high-quality, chemically vapor-deposited niobium coatings for superconducting radio frequency cavities.
The so-called Phase I grants average $75,000 for approximately six months, the energy department said. Negotiations with the selected firms are under way, and grants are expected to be awarded in August.
Under Phase I, the selected firms try to prove the workability of their innovative concepts. Each firm then is eligible to compete for Phase II funding of up to $750,000 over two years.
The energy department estimates that between a third and a half of the original grants will make it into the second phase.
