QUADRATHLON WINNERS ANNOUNCED

Alan Burnett of Hillsville won his second straight championship in the open division of the ninth annual Radford Quadrathlon Saturday.

Burnett completed the race - also known as the "Pedal, Paddle, Splash and Dash" and consisting of a half-mile swim, 13.5-mile bike ride, 5.3-mile run and 2-mile canoe down the New River - in 2 hours, 25 seconds, more than four minutes ahead of second-place finisher Mike Jean (2:04:34) of Roanoke Rapids, N.C.

Following Burnett and Jean in the open division were John Pendleton (2:33:39) and Greg Gartland (2:35:05) of Roanoke, Charles Kugler (2:39:25) of Radford and Rand Garrett (2:44:16) of Roanoke.

In other divisions:

Katherine Williamson of Lorton won the women's division in 2:16:59.

Christy Robb and Harley Johnson of Atlanta won the mixed pairs division in 2:04:17. Suzanna Gilmore and Gary Shelor of Radford were second at 2:15:42.

The four-man division was won by David Richardson, John Scott, Jeff McWhorter and David McWhorter, all of Radford, in 1:54:28. The "Wright Team" of Jim, Jamie and Matt Wright of Blacksburg and David Wright of Dublin was second in 2:06:05.

The four-person mixed team division was won by a three-person team - Brian Walter, Amanda Wood and Tim Covington, all of Blacksburg - in 1:51:57. In second place at 1:56:14 was the quartet of Mark Zimmerman and Brian Manning of Dublin, Eric Brady of Pulaski and Jill Riblett of Christiansburg.

Junius Crowgey of Roanoke won the senior division in 3:10:03, followed by Roanoke's Artie Levin in 3:20:03.
