Drug charges are filed against 11

WYTHEVILLE - Eleven Wythe and Carroll county residents have been charged with drug offenses stemming from a six-month investigation by the Wythe County Sheriff's Office, Capt. Marty Stallard said.

Johnathan Dale Dean, 21, of Max Meadows, faces two charges of misdemeanor distribution of marijuana, one of felony distribution and one of misdemeanor possession.

E.J. Jones and Jeffrey ``Bodine'' Jones of Wytheville are charged with felony distribution of marijuana. Tim Tilley of Hillsville, Clarence Gravely Jr. of Max Meadows, Darrell Harrell of Ivanhoe and Darlene Dunford of Ivanhoe are charged with misdemeanor distribution.

The others charged are Ricky Viars, Max Meadows and Gary F. McPeak, Rural Retreat, distribution of a Schedule 2 drug; Sandra Sweeney, Ivanhoe, distribution of an imitation controlled substance; and David A. Peak, Max Meadows, distribution of a Schedule 4 drug.

Youth gets 6 years for police chase

WYTHEVILLE - A 17-year-old Wytheville youth has been sentenced to six years in prison for his role in a police chase in which shots were fired at police vehicles.

Kenneth Wade Davis Jr., tried as an adult, received a total sentence of nine years under a plea agreement for obstruction of justice. Circuit Judge R. William Arthur suspended three years on condition that Davis pays for damages to the police cars.

Davis and Jody Garlick, 23, were arrested Nov. 7 after being chased by state, Wythe County and Wytheville town police throughout the county.

Davis was identified as the driver. Garlick, who fired rifle shots at police cruisers and hit at least one, has been sentenced to 15 years in prison.

Hillsville man dies in car crash

HILLSVILLE - A Hillsville man was killed Wednesday morning when he lost control of his car on U.S. 52.

Brett Anthony Keeney, 25, was dead at the scene of the one-car wreck, state police said.

Keeney was driving south about 21/2 miles from Hillsvile when his car ran off the right shoulder in a curve, came back onto the hardtop surface and ran off the right side of the road again. The car became airborne, jumped a creek and came to rest when its left side struck an embankment, police said.

The accident happened at 6:40 a.m.
