VARNEY HAS SEMI BERTH

Salem's Nick Varney won two matches to advance to the semifinal round in the 16- and 17-year-old division of the 20th annual Bobby Bowers Memorial Junior Golf Tournament.

In the round of 16, Varney defeated Phillip Welke of Langley Air Force Base 2 and 1. He beat Faber Jamerson of Appomattox by the same 2-and-1 score in a quarterfinal at Springfield Golf and Country Club.

In his semifinal today, Varney will face Chip Glover of Verona. G.W. Cable of Vienna and Miguel Rivera of Joppa, Md., meet in the other semifinal.

Roanoke's Jason Orlando was eliminated in the round of 16 in the 14-15 age group. Orlando dropped a 5-and-4 decision to Christopher Foster of Charlottesville.

In other sports in the region:

Lee Shirley of Roanoke shot a second-round 82 at the Rolex Tournament of Champions in Edmond, Okla., but she missed the cut by 12 strokes. Shirley had a two-round total of 171 in the golf tournament sponsored by the American Junior Golf Association.

Heather Gaff of Kennewick, Wash., leads the tournament with a two-day total of 145. Anne Cardea of Midlothian is fourth at 150.

The Roanoke Stars 12-and-under girls' basketball team finished 13th at the AAU National Championships in Kenner, La. The Lady Celtics of Tennessee defeated Roanoke 52-46 in the championship round.

The Stars finished with a 2-1 record in pool play and were 2-2 in the championship round.
