GOOD NEWS

If you subscribe to the view that no news is good news, then Daniel Mapel's Charlotteville newspaper, The Joy Gazette, is for you. This 12-times-a-year publication is filled only with good news and lots of exclamation points. Not a mention of what Mapel terms ``the three Cs'' - crime, crisis or corruption.

It all started with a dream Mapel had back in February in which he was telling a friend how upset he was about all the negativity in the press. He awoke convinced he must start The Joy Gazette. The first issue rolled off the presses in June, and already subscription orders have poured in from 23 states.

Mapel and his wife, Mary, research and write most of the paper's articles, which cover good news from all over the United States. ``Our job is to help people feel that life is good,'' Daniel told The Daily Progress of Charlottesville. ``And they can make a difference in their community.''

Some headlines from the July issue:

n``Antarctic Whale Sanctuary Established, Commercial Whaling Coming to a Close''

n``Senior Sunshine Corner''

n``This Book is Helping Create a Kinder World''

n``This Elephant Loves to Paint!''

n``Cool Cooking for Kids: Frozen Strawberry Pie!''

n``Talk About Plea$ant $urprises!''

n``Subscriber Feedback'' - a number of positive testimonials from joyous readers.
