Gordon has promoted several top administrators and changed the titles of others. But all have been working for the county for many years, in most cases.
Gordon interviewed some applicants from outside the county for the posts, but she said she found that those within the county were the best qualified.
When School Board members sought a successor to Bayes Wilson as superintendent, they interviewed applicants from inside and outside the county system. They selected Gordon, saying she was the top candidate.
Board members said they saw no reason to bring in an outsider when the school system is in good shape. Gordon appears to have taken a similar view.
Gordon chose Director of Administration James Gallion to be assistant superintendent. This move will eliminate one job, since Gallion will retain most of his current duties in addition to assuming new ones. No estimate of any cost saving was available.
Frank Thomas, chairman of the School Board, said board members are pleased that one job can be eliminated. The board approved the changes after a closed-door meeting with Gordon on Thursday night, her first board meeting as superintendent.
"We were glad that we can save some money by this reorganization," Thomas said. "There were some excellent candidates from outside the system, and we were pleased that the posts could be filled from within the system."
Thomas said Gordon consulted with the board as she made the personnel changes.
Gordon gave a new title and additional duties to Martin Robison, director of community relations. Robison, whose new title is executive assistant, will continue to oversee some personnel duties. He will be assisted by School Board Clerk Ruth Wade.
Gordon said Robison will continue to direct public relations. He also will work with Gordon on special projects and will be liaison to the School Board.
Dale Waters will be secretary to the superintendent, channeling information and concerns to Gordon. Waters will continue to have duties in curriculum development and planning.
