THOMAS BACK IN ACTION AT NRV SPEEDWAY

Christiansburg's Ronnie Thomas has entered the third 200-lap Late Model Stock Car race of the season, which highlights the Basham Oil/F&L Oil/Pennzoil 300 tonight at New River Valley Speedway in Radford.

Thomas did not race in the past two races as he worked to get his new Buick fine-tuned. He has not finished a race since switching from a Chrysler to the GM product.

Sky divers will land at the start/finish line at 7:45 p.m., to begin the evening's activities. Michael Waltrip's Pennzoil Winston Cup race car will be on display, and a go-kart will be given away.

In addition to the Late Model Stock Car action, there will be a 35-lap Limited Sportsman race along with 25-lappers for the Mini Stock and Pure Stock drivers.

Gates open at 2 p.m., with practice beginning at 4 p.m. Qualifying begins at 6:15 p.m., and the first race is at 8 p.m. Admission is $10 for adults and $1 for children 12 and under.

\ A $1,000 Any Car race, complete with a wet track, highlights the B-99.9 FM 300 at Franklin County Speedway tonight. The Modifieds return along with six other divisions of racing. The Late Model field will include Ronnie Newman and Kenny Wagner, two racers who have not been at the track during July.

Gates open at noon, and the first green flag drops at 8 p.m. Admission is $5 for adults. Children 10 and under are admitted free.

\ K.J. Hippensteel of Roanoke won all four of his singles matches in round-robin play at the USTA Mid-South Zone 14-under team championship that ended Thursday at the Asheville (N.C.) Racquet Club. Prior to that tournament, Hippensteel won the Mid-Atlantic singles title at the Virginia Beach Tennis Club, winning five matches, including a 7-5, 6-0 decision over Dustin Friedman of Owings Mills, Md.

\ Jason Anderson slugged a three-run home run and Kevin Feazell pitched 3 innings of hitless relief to lead Post 3 West to a 10-5 victory over Post 3 North in American Legion baseball at William Byrd. Ben Basham had four hits and Ryan Blevins added a two-run homer to lead West (8-6).
