Union ratifies pact 2nd time around

Members of United Paper Workers local 843 got at least some of their demands where they wanted them: on paper. Union members voted late Thursday to ratify Chesapeake Packaging Co.'s second proposed contract.

"Of course, you never get everything you want," said local union president James Bush, "but I guess we did all right."

Edward P. Godsey, president of the company's Roanoke operations, said he was glad Chesapeake and the union negotiated a four-year contract. "I don't want to do this every three years," he said.

Neither the union nor the company would disclose specific terms of the pact.

The union rejected the company's first offering July 1, but union and company officials met twice more. The new contract started 7 a.m. Friday.
