GERALD L. HARRINGTON has been appointed vice president merchandising of the newly formed Fashion Trend division of Roanoke-based Singer Furniture Co. He will be responsible for new product development, merchandising and sales support of the new furniture line. The Fashion Trend division manufactures bedroom, dining room and occasional furniture under Singer Furniture and private label names.
Harrington joined Singer in January 1990 as manager of its occasional furniture lines. He began his furniture career with The Lane Co. and later formed his own furniture company before coming to Singer.
BANKING
SHEILA M. HALL has been promoted to vice president of First Union Corp. She is manager of consumer loan documentation review at the consumer loan service center in Roanoke. She joined First National Exchange Bank, a predecessor of First Union National Bank of Virginia, in 1973.
ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT
JOHN STRUTNER of Abingdon has been appointed part-time executive director of Virginia Southwest Blue Ridge Highlands Inc. for one year. Strutner will help promote the region's tourism industry and establish a program for a permanent executive director, while continuing to work as community services manager for the division of tourism within the Virginia Department of Economic Development.
HEALTH CARE
J. SCOTT STEPHENS, president of Rehabilitation Services of Roanoke, was recently elected to the American Physical Therapy Association's board of directors. The association is a national professional organization of physical therapists, physical therapist assistants and students.
MANUFACTURING
ROBERT M. PHILLIPS, chairman of Unilever Prestige Personal Products, which incorporates Elizabeth Arden and Calvin Klein Cosmetics, and president and chief executive officer of Elizabeth Arden Co., has been named Unilever's director of personal products, succeeding ANTHONY BURGMANS. Elizabeth Arden Co. has cosmetics manufacturing and distribution operations in Roanoke.

The Roanoke Valley Estate Planning Council has elected new officers: ROBERT C. BYE, Northwestern Mutual Life Insurance Co., president; CHARLES W. CROSSON SR., Hollins College, vice president; ALAN E. KLINGER, certified public accountant, secretary; and MICHAEL JOHNSON, Crestar, treasurer. Immediate past president is BRUCE C. STOCKBURGER, Gentry, Locke, Rakes & Moore.
JOSEPH A. HOPKINS, assistant vice president of tax administration at Norfolk Southern Corp. in Roanoke, has been elected treasurer of the Virginia Chapter of Tax Executives Institute Inc. The institute provides a forum for the discussion of current tax issues by corporate tax officials.
RETAIL
ROGER L. MAYNARD of Roanoke has been promoted to vice president of store operations at Ewald-Clark Inc., a regional retailer of cameras, films, photographic supplies and photofinishing. He will oversee five stores, be responsible for purchasing and will be a member of the company's board of directors. Maynard was a co-owner of a photographic business in Beckley, W. Va., before joining Ewald-Clark in 1988 and has been a branch manager of two Ewald-Clark locations.
