CHRISTIANSBURG - Bob Ridley of Georgeson & Co., an antique and collectible shop in Christiansburg, has created a program for local businesses to aid small businesses in Albany, Ga., that have been ravaged by flooding.
Ridley, who was stationed in Albany in 1956 at the Turner Air Force Base, said he fondly remembers the small business people along the town's main street. His program, Main Street to Main Street, will help some of those businesses rebuild.
When Ridley mentioned to colleagues his plan to donate a percentage of his sales from Thursday through Saturday, some followed suit. Others have given donations. So far, 17 businesses have contributed to the program raising a total of $500. Ridley has contacted the Albany Police Department to find businesses in need of the contributions.
Ridley sees most aid to flood victims coming in the form of water and shelter to individuals. "As business people, we want to help individual businesses clean up and buy new stock," he said. "The merchant participation has been tremendous."
Contributors may send a check made out to: Main Street to Main Street, in care of Danny Hardy, the First National Bank, P.O. Box 600, Christiansburg, Va. 24073. For further information, please call Georgeson & Co. at 381-1884.
