DEPUTY SUES SHERIFF OVER OVERTIME

A Bedford County sheriff's deputy has filed suit against his boss, Sheriff Carl Wells, claiming that he's owed more than $50,000 in overtime pay.

Deputy Douglas Mayhew, in a suit filed in U.S. District Court in Roanoke on Monday, said he's had to work extra hours because he keeps the department canine unit's dog at his house.

Mayhew said he spends several hours a day grooming, feeding and exercising the dog, including time on his days off and during vacation.

He is asking for $54,814 in overtime pay plus an unspecified amount of damages.
