WASHINGTON - The Clinton administration decided Monday not to lift a ban on medicinal marijuana but said it may allow privately funded experiments to try to conclude whether the illegal drug has any real health benefits.
The Public Health Service made the announcement in letters to members of Congress who had urged the administration to overturn former President Bush's ban on medicinal marijuana.

Few women use guns in self-defense
WASHINGTON - In a year when 1,908 women were killed by guns in the United States, just 26 women used handguns to kill in self-defense, according to a study released Monday.
The Washington-based Violence Policy Center based its findings on unpublished FBI statistics for 1992. The center's report is part of an ongoing study of women and guns, planned for release in August.

Elders' son guilty
of cocaine dealing
LITTLE ROCK, Ark. - The 28-year-old son of Surgeon General Joycelyn Elders was convicted Monday of selling $275 worth cocaine to an undercover officer last summer.
Deputy Prosecutor Chris Palmer said he will seek at least 10 years in prison for Kevin Elders at sentencing Aug. 29.
Circuit Judge John Plegge ruled in the nonjury trial that Elders had failed to prove entrapment.
Elders had claimed that an acquaintance who set up the drug deal had threatened to expose Elders' drug habit and embarrass his mother during her Senate confirmation hearings unless Elders obtained cocaine for him.
