The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said Monday it will require labels on cars and trucks weighing 8,500 pounds or less to tell buyers where the parts of the vehicle were made.
The label will have to state:
nOverall combined percentage of parts that originated in the United States and Canada.
nOther countries that contributed more than 15 percent of the vehicle's parts, and the percentage each contributed.
nCountry from which the engine and transmission originated.
nWhere the vehicle was assembled.

Signet to build center in Henrico
Signet Banking Corp., Richmond-based parent of Signet Bank, said Monday it will build a $30 million operations center on a 50-acre tract in Henrico County. Construction is expected to begin by the end of September and be completed at the end of 1995. The building will contain 300,000 square feet, with room for doubling that capacity over time.
The company will move the support operations for its consumer banking, commercial, real estate and capital markets lines of business. The bank-card division will expand into the vacated space at the existing operations center in Richmond. The bank's Roanoke-area operations are not expected to be affected by the changes.
Signet said it expects that savings of $1.5 million a year from consolidating operations offices will outweigh the cost of the new facility over time. These operations offices are now scattered throughout the Richmond area.
